  • Week 5: Lions – Bengals Wednesday Injury Report

The first practice report of Week 5 just dropped and quite a few Lions players and starters) showing up after that physical game with the Browns last week. A few surprises for the Lions, but mainly the usual suspects and those that were nicked up in the game Monday. For the Bengals, only three players and one starter, otherwise their big injuries (Burrow) are on IR. Bengals Wednesday: The three players listed were TE Noah Fant (LP) and Shemar Stewart (both holdovers from last week) along with WR Charlie Jones, who was hurt in the Bengals last game. Not much to analyze, Fant is likely the closest to playing, which would give their offense a boost, but Burrow is unavailable on IR, so it may not matter. Lions Wednesday: The report was pretty much as expected, with everyone that was injured in the Browns win (Reed, Arnold, Cunningham and Joseph) showing up in some capacity. Holdovers (Vaki and Decker) were also listed, but that was to be expected. Alim McNeil returned to practice form his knee injury and was a Limited Participant, indicating his 21-day return to lay window may very well not need the entire time. The only surprise was Khalil Dorsey, who suffered a concussion at some point between Sunday and today.

  • Week 5 Officiating: Meet Carl Cheffers and Crew

Name: Carl Cheffers Age: 65 Promoted To Referee: 2008 Graphic Courtesy of Football Zebras Last Game: Week 4 2025 IND @ LAR Last Lions Game: 10/27/24 – TEN 14 @ DET 52 The Tennessee Titans committed 8 penalties for 60 yards. They were flagged a total of 12 times. The Detroit Lions committed 3 penalties for 29 yards. They were flagged a total of 3 times. Together there were 11 penalties for 89 yards. There were 15 total flags in this game. Notable Carl Cheffers and crew have the most penalties called per game in the NFL through four weeks and that isn’t a good thing for the Lions. In Cheffer’s Crews three games, they call many of the penalties that have plagued the lions all year (See chart above) and on top of that, they are No 1 in calling penalties on the Away team. The Bengals aren’t out of the woods, as they also have multiple infractions that are a favorite flag of this crew. This Crew focuses on the lines (Offensive Holding, False Starts, Defensive Offsides, Ineligible Downfield Pass and Illegal Formation) are 5 of their top 10, and the Defensive back field where Pass Interference (both ways) and Defensive Holding are on their radar. I am concerned about the latter two, as Higgins and Chase going against backup CBs and officials that are flag happy are never a good combination.

  • Lions Offense is the best the Browns have seen after 34-10 Beat Down

The Lions knew this game would be tough, as the Browns have (had?) the best Defense in the NFL, and then they decided to run their mouths. Myles Garrett and Mason Graham got all butthurt when Lions OC John Morton answered a question and stated that the Browns are really good but haven’t seen a running game likes the Lions yet. Based on the game, one point to John Morton. The Lions ended up with 109 yards rushing, and Jamyr Gibbs with 91 of those personally gained more than the Bengals (46), Ravens (45) and Packers (81) did as a team in the Browns first three games. Goff was under intense pressure all day, but the Browns did not register a sack. The best part of the game, even with the win, was hearing Jonathan Vilma mention that he and Kenny Albert would be in London calling the Vikings/Browns game next week, and nowhere near Cincinnati. It was good, then not good, then good! What Went Wrong: Penalties and injuries in the defensive backfield. Now, some of those were suspect at best, and the crew for the game is notorious for calling DPI and Defensive Holding, but Branch and Arnold were flagged multiple times early on and that isn’t sustainable. As for the injuries, Arnold (Shoulder/Pec) and DJ Reed (hamstring) both left the game and did not return. If they are out for any amount of time, the Lions might be in a pinch as they have a mix of Safety/CB hybrids on the roster after Rock Ya-Sin, Amik Robertson and Khalil Dorsey. The practice squad is no help, with only DBs Eric Hallett and Loren Strickland on it, and both are technically Safeties. Once again, I saw some sloppy tackling and Quinshon Judkins getting 3-4 extra yards after contact, but ultimately it didn’t cost the Lions the game. The offense was “sloppy”, but some of that is attributed to the Browns defense. On Offense it feels like there we so many missed opportunities to Jameson Williams. He was open several times and the ball didn’t get there, and other times he wasn’t able to come up with tough, but catchable balls. The lone Goff Int was also a mis-read by either Goff or Jamo, not sure, but seems like the Lions should have gone away from the deeper routes earlier and focus on getting him and his speed against LBs and Safeties on those crossing routes like the one they hit for 27-yards in the 4th qtr. DJ Reed on way back to locker room What Went Right: The Lions offense shrugged off some mistakes and a very good defense to still put up 27 offensive points and had a punt return for a TD for good measure. Bates tied his career long on FG and the Lions came out of the game at 3-1. Did I mention that the Lions didn’t give up a sack despite Goff being under intense pressure? That is the third game in a row without giving one up, which is a record for the Lions in a season since sacks became an official stat in 1982. St Brown had 7 catches, 70 yards and two TDs, the first player against the Browns this year to get to all those totals combined. The defense, frankly, outplayed the vaunted Browns defense, notching 3 sacks, 3 INTs, 10 Passes Defensed and 9 QB hits while putting the offense in good position all game. A big reason is due to the outstanding LB play, as Anzalone, Barnes and Campbell are playing at elite levels, with Campbell playing at Pro Bowl level IMO. Combined, they had 24 tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL, 1 PD and 2 QB hits. Outside of a few issues with tackling and getting dragged by Judkins for extra yards, they played outstanding in both run defense and coverage. Once again, Sheppard made great adjustments in-game and the defense got better as the game went on. Hutchinson Strip Sack Shout out to Campbell, Morton and Shephard for great adjustments and once again leaving their foot on the gas, outscoring the Browns 14-3 in the second half and putting the game away. Amon-Ra St Brown TD No 1 What’s Next: The Lions return to the road and travel down I-75 to Cincinnati to play the Burrow-less Bengals Sunday at 1pm on Fox. The Bengals are 2-1 pending Monday nights outcome but are struggling mightily without Joe Burrow under center. They beat the Browns 17-16, Jaguars 31-27 and were skunked by the Vikings in the first game without Burrow, 48-10. Bengals are currently 28th in the NFL in pts allowed per game at 30.3, but only scoring 19.3 pts per game, which is good for 31st currently. The offense is dead last in YG at 220.7, and the Defense is 25th giving up 359.7 YPG. The Lions are No 1 in Pts per game at 34.3 and 6th in yards per game at 365.0. Defense is 11th in yards per game at 293.0 and 15th at 22.0 points per game allowed.

  • Week 4: Lions – Browns Friday Injury Report with Game Designations

The final practice report was released today with game designations, and the trending of the injuries was as expected for both teams. Lions saw one upgrade, one downgrade and a lot of the same. The Browns have a healthy roster of players, with only one player listed with a Questionable designation. Browns Friday: The Browns are basically fully healthy with everyone that is not on a Reserve list, as only T Jack Conklin had a designation of Questionable for Sunday. Every other player that has been on the list this week went through a Full Practice and is available. Thursday: Multiple upgrades, including Hall, Ward and Harris form NP to LP, Bitonio, Garrett and Njoku form LP to FP, while Conklin, Delpit and Tillman were all still LP. Wednesday: The Browns had a lot of players show up on their practice report, including seven starters. The bulk of the group were listed as Limited Practice while only three players (including starting CB Denzel Ward) were listed and DNP. A couple of big names (Garrett and Bitonio) were listed for Rest and the others seemed to be nursing aches and pains. Who isn’t on the practice report is the biggest blow, as LT Dawand Jones went on IR this morning with a season-ending knee injury, further weaking a line that is top 10 in Pressure rate, QB hits and QB hurries and pocket time. Lions Friday: Only surprise was that Zach Cunningham was downgraded to NP and OUT for the game. He played pretty well against the Ravens but won’t be on the field this week. Otherwise, Decker, AQM, Vaki and Thomas were all NP today with Vaki and Thomas OUT, and Decker and AQM Questionable. Barnes was the lone improvement, going from LP to FP and is IN. Thursday: The new name listed was LB Zach Cunningham, who popped up with a Hamstring and Limited Participant today. Decker, Vaki and Thomas all were still NP, Barnes still a LP and improvements from AQM (NP to LP), DJ Reed from listed at a Full Participant, to coming completely off the list. Wednesday: After a tough Monday night game, the Lions practice report is estimated for today, but in addition to the usual suspects, there were a couple of surprises on there. Those that were estimated to have Not Practiced were Decker, Thomas and Vaki and a surprise in Muhammad. Barnes was listed as a Limited Participant and Reed as a Full Participant. I was wondering if Hutchinson would appear, as he was seen with an ice bag on his knee after the game, but that must have been precautionary. • Multiple Lions Eligible to Return from Reserve List next week…but will they?

With Week 4 off and running, there will be a significant number of players around the NFL that will be eligible to come off their team’s respective reserve lists starting Monday or Tuesday next week.  The Lions have a total of 15 Players currently on one their reserve list , with nine of them already declared out for the season. However, that leaves six players, including several key contributors, that will be eligible to return mid-year including four of them eligible to come off the Reserve List at the conclusion of Week 4 Monday 10/29/25.  Here is a refresher on the NFL Reserve List rules for 2025, which allow up to eight returning players for the season, with each player only allowed to return twice:   2025 NFL Reserve list rules PUP List: Players who suffered injuries during NFL activities before training camp must sit out the first four games of the regular season. Afterward, teams have a five-week window to allow these players to start practicing. Once practice begins, teams have an additional three weeks to decide whether to activate the player or keep them on the PUP list for the remainder of the season. NFI List: Similar to the PUP list but applies to players who were injured outside of NFL activities. These injuries could occur during personal workouts, accidents, or from pre-existing conditions that players had before joining the NFL. IR List: Players on the injured reserve list must miss a minimum of four games before they can return. Once a player is healthy enough to practice, they must be designated for a return. This designation clears the player to resume practice and triggers a 21-day window during which the team must either activate the player onto the 53-man roster or place them on season-ending injured reserve. Teams can designate up to eight players  for return from injured reserve during the season. However, each player can be designated for return only twice. Here are the four players, all key contributors, with a brief history of the reason they are on a Reserve List and timeline of updates. Looking at the injuries and recent updates, it appears only one player (Miles Frazier) may be ready to start his practice window next week. Josh Paschal – EDGE – Unidentified Surgery   Projected return:  Mid to Late October   Josh Paschal, the Detroit Lions' third-year defensive end underwent an unspecified "clean-out" surgery during the offseason following his annual cancer screening. Paschal has a history with skin cancer, having been diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma (a rare, aggressive form) on his right foot in 2018 during his sophomore year at Kentucky. He underwent three surgeries and months of treatment that year but overcame it. Since then, he's maintained yearly scans, with no recurrence reported. The recent surgery, described by head coach Dan Campbell as a "clean-up" procedure was not identified to a specific issue.   Key Timeline and Progress Injury Onset/Surgery: Offseason 2025 (exact date unspecified, prior to OTAs in May). July 20, 2025 Update: Campbell projected Paschal to miss all of preseason but return "probably early September," positioning him as the No. 3 DE behind Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport once healthy. August 21, 2025 Update: Timeline extended; Campbell indicated Paschal would likely start the season on the non-football injury (NFI) list, sidelining him for at least the first four games (through October 2 vs. Carolina Panthers). This allows a 21-day practice window upon designation for return. September 26, 2025 Status: With the Lions at 2-1 through Week 3, Paschal remains on NFI with no reported setbacks. He's eligible for activation as early as Week 5 (October 2), but projections lean toward a mid-to-late October debut to ensure full ramp-up. Recent team reports note steady rehab progress, focusing on strength and conditioning.     Alim McNeil – DL – Knee Injury   Projected return:  Likely Early November   Alim McNeill, the Detroit Lions' star defensive tackle and a cornerstone of their front four, suffered a torn ACL in his right knee on December 15, 2024, during a Week 15 loss to the Buffalo Bills. He underwent successful surgery shortly after and was placed on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list at the start of training camp in July 2025, making him ineligible to practice or play until designated for return.   Key Timeline and Progress Injury Onset: December 15, 2024, vs. Buffalo Bills. April 2025 Update: Head coach Dan Campbell indicated McNeill would likely miss training camp and the "early part of the season," emphasizing a cautious approach to ensure full recovery. May-June 2025 Updates: McNeill shared positive progress, noting his leg was "getting strong" and expected to be "better than before" after rigorous rehab. July 2025 Update: GM Brad Holmes suggested a potential return "a little bit earlier than expected," with McNeill feeling "really good" during training. August 2025 Status: Described his rehab as "putting the finishing touches on a cake," ahead of schedule but still on PUP with no firm date. September 7, 2025 Update: Provided a soft timeline, confirming he'd be back "for sure" before Thanksgiving (Week 13, November 27), now in the final stages of rehab. September 18, 2025 Status: Revealed he's 93-94% recovered and could play if needed this week, nine months post-injury and on the early side of the typical 9 to 12-month ACL timeline. Still on PUP, eligible for designation to return as early as Week 5 (October 2 vs. Carolina Panthers), with a 21-day window to activate. Optimistic projections point to mid-October at the earliest, though November is more realistic to allow 1-2 weeks of practice reps.     Malcolm Rodriguez – LB – Knee Injury   Projected return:  Late October – Early November   Malcolm Rodriguez, the Detroit Lions' fourth-year linebacker and key special teams’ contributor, suffered a torn ACL in his right knee on November 28, 2024 (Thanksgiving Day), during a Week 13 victory over the Chicago Bears. The 26-year-old was placed on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list at the start of training camp in July 2025, making him ineligible to practice or play until designated for return.   Key Timeline and Progress Injury Onset: November 28, 2024, vs. Chicago Bears. June 5, 2025 Update: Head coach Dan Campbell provided a conservative estimate, stating Rodriguez would miss the first two months of the season and target a return "somewhere in November." July 22, 2025 Update: Campbell offered a more optimistic outlook during training camp, projecting Rodriguez as "another October guy," aligning him with a mid-season return rather than late in the year. August 18, 2025 Status: Still on the PUP list to start the regular season, with steady rehab progress noted but no acceleration beyond the October timeline. September 26, 2025 Status: No new setbacks reported. Rodriguez remains on PUP, meaning he can be activated after the team's fourth game (October 2 vs. Carolina Panthers) but is unlikely to debut until late October or early November, depending on ramp-up. Recent observations show him progressing in individual drills, similar to other recovering players.     Mile Frazier – IOL – Knee Injury   Projected return:  As soon as Week 5   Miles Frazier, the Detroit Lions' fifth-round pick (No. 171 overall) in the 2025 NFL Draft out of LSU, suffered a knee injury during the offseason, sidelining him since late May 2025. The 6-foot-6, 317-pound versatile interior offensive lineman (capable of playing guard and tackle) was placed on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list when he reported to training camp on July 17. Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed the injury on July 22, estimating a return timeline of "September or October," which would allow Frazier to miss all of training camp and preseason but potentially debut early in the regular season.   Key Timeline and Progress Injury Onset: Late May 2025, prior to OTAs (where Frazier was already limited). July 22 Update: Campbell described it as a "knee" issue without further specifics, noting it occurred before camp and projecting a multi-month recovery. Analysts speculated it could involve surgery given the ~4-month timeline from onset. August 15 Status: Listed as "returning later in the season" alongside other key players like LB Malcolm Rodriguez (ACL) and DT Alim McNeill (ACL). August 31 Progress: Frazier posted on social media showing him back to light practice work while still on PUP, signaling positive momentum ahead of the NFL opener. This suggested he was ramping up conditioning after missing reps. September 19 Update: Observed working individually with a trainer during practice, but still ineligible to return to full team drills until Week 5 (October 2, 2025, vs. Carolina Panthers). This aligns with PUP rules: players can return after the fourth game if activated off the list.

  • Week 4 Staff Predictions – Browns at Lions

Week 4 has arrived, and while the Lions might be tempted to look at this game and think they finally have a non-drama cupcake in the Browns, but that could be anything further than the truth. Former Lions Head Coach Jim Schwartz has the Browns Defense humming, ranked No 1 in total yards given up so far through three weeks. However, Dan Campbell gets his team back at home after 2 of 3 on the road (against the Packers and Ravens no less) and this team has a chip on their shoulder still after getting blown out by the Packers and disrespected against the Ravens. The two teams haven't met since 2021 in Cleveland, a 13-10 Browns win, because the Lions got good, and the Browns remained....well the Browns. It will come down to the No 1 Defense in the Browns vs the No 2 Offense in the Lions. On to the picks.... Week 3 is done, and we have a clear leader in Brent. Not only is he 2-1 in his picks, but his point total predictions for the Lions through three games was spot on at 103. Dan is second at 2-1 and a 17 pt diff, Chris is 3rd at 1-2 with a 21 pt diff and Mike is looking to move up this week but is currently sitting in last at 1-2 with a 21 pt difference. Mike The Detroit Lions face the Cleveland Browns our AFC friends from across the lake. The Lions are 9.5 favorites. The Browns have the # 1 Defense by yards allowed. They have 11 sacks on the year and only average 2.2 yards allowed per rush. The Browns Defense is stout. This will be a showdown of a Great Defense vs the Great Offense of the Lions. The Game is in Ford Field which has become one of the best homefields in the NFL over the last 3 years. The Browns have not faced an offense the caliber of the Lions. For the Browns Offense have only scored 5 total TDs this year. The Lions will still have to play great defense and stop the rookie Judkins from having a big day and make the Browns throw the ball. I think the Lions will be able to do that. Home Field and fired up team from a big MNF win earlier this week reeks of a Trap game for the Lions. I think Dan Campbell and the guys are going to be focused and fired up. Lions win going away this week. Lions 31 - Browns 17 Brent he 2025 Detroit Lions are a team to be reckoned with. The youth of the past two years is gone with the exceptions of Tate Ragland and Tyler Williams. The uber talented Detroit Lions now have experienced the highs of a 12-5 and 15-2 seasons and the experience of winning two playoff games and losing in a shocking upset to end the 2024 season. The Lions know how to turn it on when they need to and now believe they are the most talented team in the NFL. Winning on the road in Baltimore, ups the ante to a whole new level. This team is confident, experiences, and talented across the entire roster. They have fewer holes than any team in the NFL and know it. The Cleveland Browns come to town facing a juggernaut Detroit Lions football team. Their only hope is to hold the Lions offense to 10 points or less. While the Browns have a solid, maybe even elite, front seven, they must score to keep this game close. The Lions will take advantage of the Browns using the play action game to keep the linebacking corps from dropping into the passing lanes. This will give Jared Goff time to diagnose the passing lanes and take advantage of the Browns secondary. The key to this game is the ability to hold up at the offense tackle giving Goff time. My bet is on Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker. Defensively, the Lions will continue to clean up the secondary by giving Amik Roberston more time on the outside motivating Terrion Arnold to pick up his game. The tactic will prove successful. The Lions will use a stout running defense to knock off the Cleveland Browns 38-10. Of note, the Detroit Lions have never scored 90 points in back-to-back games until the past two weeks against the Bears and Ravens. The offense is held below the 45 point average but don’t be surprised if they surpass the amount again this week. Lions 38, Browns 10 Chris Fresh off that Monday night masterpiece against Baltimore, the Lions face every championship team's biggest challenge: staying locked in against inferior competition. Dan Campbell's already preaching focus because he knows what happens when teams start believing their own hype. Cleveland's defense ranks first in the league, but let's be honest about what they're working with offensively. Quinshon Judkins is their only legitimate threat, which means Kelvin Sheppard can stack the box and dare Joe Flacco to beat us through the air. Spoiler alert: he can't. This feels like a perfect setup for Terrion Arnold to announce himself with his first career pick. Flacco's going to test our young corners, and Arnold's going to make him pay for it. Meanwhile, our offense does just enough in what becomes a surprisingly defensive slugfest. The emotional letdown never materializes because Campbell won't let it happen. Lions 24, Browns 13 Dan I have seen this being called a trap game for the Lions, as the Browns are 1-2, with a great defense and a bad offense and the Lions are coming off a massive Monday night win over the Ravens. Personally, I think that won't be the case, as the Lions saw what the Browns did to the Packers last Sunday, which is the same team that manhandled the Lions in Week 1 at Lambeau. Campbell will have the team ready to play, and this will be Offense of the Lions vs Defense of the Browns. Speaking of the Cleveland Defense, they may be No 1 in the league in yards allowed at 204.3, but they are very pedestrian at Pts allowed, tied for 18th best at 22.7 per game. keep in mind, before beating the Packers, the Browns were humbled in M&T Bank Stadium by the Ravens, giving up 41 pts, mainly to Lamar Jacksons Arm, while going all out to stuff the run. The Lions aren't one dimensional, they can run it down your throat, run it outside, quick pass you to death or throw it over the top. The Browns will struggle to stay ahead of the Lions Offense the entire game IMO. As for the Browns Offense, its abysmal. Bottom third in yards per game, 30th in Pts per game (15.3) and middle of the pack at best in most major offensive categories. As for the Lions, they are coming off a second straight magnificent offensive performance, with no signs of letting up. The OL has jelled nicely, keeping Goff clean and crating running lanes for the backs and imposing their will against both the Bears and ravens. With the Browns best DBs defense banged up in Safety Grant Delpit and CB Denzel Ward, they will need their depth guys to step up to contain LaPorta, St Brown, Williams and whichever other weapon gets loose in the Browns back seven. I just don't see it for an entire game. The Lions defense should absolutely feast, as Flacco is a statue back there and Sheppard has been doing a masterful job of adjusting in game to keep the defense pressure on. Bottom line, I don't see the Browns being in the game unless their defense/ST puts up 14 points, as the Lions have too much fire power and can attack a beat-up browns back-seven relentlessly with RBs, TE and WRs. If the Lions score 17 pts, they should win this one, but I think they will drop the hammer on the Browns by doubling them up to continue their streak of 30+ pt. games. Lions 34, Ravens 17

  • Week 4: Lions – Browns Thursday Injury Report

Second practice report as released this week, and the Lions had a new name listed, but saw a couple of upgrades as well. The Browns had everyone present at practice and appear to be getting healthy in a hurry, with multiple players upgrading form yesterday. Browns Thursday: Multiple upgrades, including Hall, Ward and Harris form NP to LP, Bitonio, Garrett and Njoku form LP to FP, while Conklin, Delpit and Tillman were all still LP. Wednesday: The Browns had a lot of players show up on their practice report, including seven starters. The bulk of the group were listed as Limited Practice while only three players (including starting CB Denzel Ward) were listed and DNP. A couple of big names (Garrett and Bitonio) were listed for Rest, and the others seemed to be nursing aches and pains. Who isn’t on the practice report is the biggest blow, as LT Dawand Jones went on IR this morning with a season-ending knee injury, further weaking a line that is top 10 in Pressure rate, QB hits and QB hurries and pocket time. Lions Thursday: The new name listed was LB Zach Cunningham, who popped up with a Hamstring and Limited Participant today. • Week 4: Lions – Browns Wednesday Injury Report

First practice report of Week 4 has a bunch of big names on it, although that is to be expected after a couple of hard-fought victories last week for both the Lions and Browns. A few surprises for the Lions, but mainly the usual suspects and those that were nicked up in the game Monday. For the Browns, Browns Wednesday: The Browns had a lot of players show up on their practice report, including seven starters. • Lions sign Dwelley to Active Roster and IDL Quinton Jefferson to Practice Squad

The Lions must have liked what they saw of TE Ross Dwelley last week, as they made his elevation to the Active Roster a full signing today, filling the void when Marcus Davenport went on IR Monday. To replace him on the Practice Squad, the Lions have brought in veteran DL Quinton Jefferson to provide additional DL depth for the season. The 6’4” 291lb Jefferson was last with the Bills in 2024, playing in 12 games as an IDL with five healthy scratches. He has been a decent pass rusher form the interior D-Line in his nine-year career, having notched 27.5 sacks, 39 Hurries, 44 Knockdowns on 116 pressures.
