The Lions are getting into the back half of their draft picks and with their first of two 5th rounders, they took Arizona State CB Keith Abney II. Consensus seems to be that the Detroit Lions got a steal at 157 with the 61st overall rated player in the draft. Local and national analysts alike are throwing around the word "love" the pick for the Lions. Abney Key Stats 98 career total tackles 21 PDs, 6 INTs and 1 sack in his career 46.1 passer rating against and 44.4% completion percentage in 2025 The Grey Manes thought he was a very nice add and was a great value pick despite being slightly on the smaller side. Several comps had him similar to D'Angelo Ponds. There is some concern about the DT depth, but there are still four more picks coming and this value was too great to pass up. His college Jersey number of 1 is currently worn by Jameson Williams, so Abney will need to pick a new one.

Day 3 of the NFL Draft kicked off, and the Detroit Lions had fille their two primary needs with Blake Miller and Derrick Moore, but they still had some holes at LB, DT, S, CB and depth positions. First pick of the day came at #118, and the Lions stuck at the spot and picked up Michigan LB Jimmy Rolder. The Lions are getting a hard-nosed run stuffer, great special teamer who has an opportunity to develop into a starting Middle Backer long term. One key stat that jumped out at me is his missed tackle rate Rolder's 2025 Key Stats 73 total tackles (7 for loss) 2 sacks 93.4 passer rating against 13 pressures 4.7% Missed Tackle-Rate, t5th Best of 226 FBS linebackers (minimum 500 defensive snaps) per PFF The Grey Manes thoughts was overlay positive as it fills a big need and frankly, we didn't really know which way Brad was going to go, so he is 3 for 3 on filling big needs with players that fit the Lions prospect profile. His college Jersey number of 30 is currently worn by Khalil Dorsey, so it's likely Rolder will need to pick a new number.

The Detroit Lions came into Day 2 of the NFL draft having just a single pick in Rd 2 at #50, having traded away both 3rd rounders last year in the move up to grab WR Isaac TeSlaa. After selecting (and filling a substantial need) in Rd 1 with OT Blake Miller of Clemson, the Lions had several needs at EDGE, LB, DT and DB Depth that they could have targeted. As the round started to unfold, it was going well for the Lions, with the first seven players picked not aligning with the Lions primary needs, including IOL, WR, CB and DT. However, starting at three, and a then a mini run at eight and nine on EDGE caused Brad Holmes to finally pull the trigger and move up from 18the (50) to 12the (44), looking to secure the player to anchor the DE opposite from Aiden Hutchinson for the next several years. The choice was Michigan Edge Derrick Moore, who many of us at the Grey Manes felt was the best overall choice for the Lions in rd. 2 at 50 due to his versatility, ability to anchor against the run and high PFF grades. Holmes actually had his choice of a few "speed" rush guys like Zion Young and Gabe Jacas at the pick (Young went immediately after at 45, suggesting Brad jumped in front of the Ravens to grab Moore), but the transplant hometown kid was the pick. Interesting enough, the Ravens new head coach is Jesse Minter, who was Michigan's Defensive coordinator for Moore's first two years at Michigan in 2022 and 2023. So, Brad saw the writing on the wall (Moore is originally from the Baltimore area as well) and made the bold move to secure his guy. The best part is the Lions didn't have to give up too much to move up those six spots, sending the Jacksonville Jaguars their second 4th (128) and #50 to jump to #44. Overall, the mood here at The Grey Manes was overly positive on the pick of Moore, filling a massive need at EDGE and not having to give up any future or many of the remaining picks in the current draft. His PFF grades continued to improve every year, as did his performance, culminating in a 2025 campaign that saw Moore record 30 Tackles, 10.5 TFL, 10 Sacks, 3 PD, 2 FF and 1 FR. His tape backs up his play, and he is now a Detroit Lion. His college Jersey number of 8 was recently picked up by WR Greg Dortch after Kyle Allen left, so it will be interesting to ee how that plays out.

After what can only be called a disappointing season, the Detroit Lions made a move today to shore up the Offensive Line to make another run at the Super Bowl in the upcoming 2026-2027 season. Sticking with the 17th overall pick, the Lions selected Clemson OT Blake Miller to likely be the starting RT of the future. Take a look at his RAS score and PFF grades form last year, and he is about the most balance OL pick of the draft, and a great addition for Hank Fraley. His RAS is about as high as you can get, which has been a Brad Holmes priority of his draft picks, bringing athletic players into the fold.

As we enter Day 1 of the NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions are sitting in a decent, but not enviable position to add to the core players on the roster starting with tonight's Round 1 of the 2026 Draft. Millions of mock drafts have been put together by people all across the world, and the Lions have been trending as taking an OT at Pick #17, specifically with Alabama OT Kadyn Proctor as the favorite. While I am not so sure that is the way Brad Holmes will go, he is one of the few players the Detroit Lions met with more than once during the pre-draft process. The Detroit Lions have had quite a bit of turnover this offseason, with some key veterans moving on in Free Agency while others were cut or retired. In addition to all of the Fre e Agents signed, there will be plenty of Jersey Number changes coming up for the 2026 Offseason. Below is the running list of known number changes for returning players and the free agent signings that do and do not have a new number. However, before you look at that list, one interesting nugget is to see the Lions players that are still Free Agents, and whose numbers the Lions haven't re-assigned yet. There are several that jump out, but here are the primary ones I think the Lions haven't 100% closed the door on them returning yet: Current list of Unassigned Detroit Lions Jersey Numbers (as of 4/4/26) 98 - DJ Reader: Outside of bringing back Myles Adams, the Lions haven't signed any Interior Defensive Linemen in Free Agency to this point. The depth appears to be adequate, albeit unproven, so a healthy Reader playing spot duty is still a better option than Wingo, Smith and Adams at this point IMO. Once the draft is done, I think there will be clarity here, and at this point I would say its 50%  chance he re-signs. 29 - Avonte Maddox: Not sure why Avonte Maddox hasn't signed with another team or re-signed with the Lions at this point, as I thought he brought some veteran depth and flexibility to the Lions DB room. It could be that the Lions (and other teams) are waiting until after the draft to take a look at Maddox, but this is one that feels like Holmes should bring back to compete for a DB roster spot. I would say that he has a 50%  chance of re-signing. <-- RE-SIGNED 4/6/26 47, 52 - Ezekial Turner and Zach Conningham: This feels like a spot where one of these two LBs could possibly be re-signed to help build out the depth and Special Teams play. Turner was hurt all last season, so the Lions never got to see what they had in him, and Cunningham played mainly on Special teams when he was available. I would put the chance that one of these re-sign at 50%  due to the lack of LBs on the roster, and both re-sign at 25% . 68 - Taylor Decker : Despite the back-and-forth banter, I think both the Lions and Decker would benefit from a reconciliation with Decker re-signing to either be the starting LT again (if Lions whiff in the draft) or to be the veteran OT presence and a mentor to Penei and a Rookie early round choice. I will say that the chance this happens appears to be below 50% , and probably closer to 25% with a 1st or 2nd round OT drafted , but we should again have more clarity after the draft. 60, 84, 92, 93: These four players ( Glasgow, Zylstra, Davenport and Paschal ) feel like the door SHOULD be closed on them returning. This really holds true when you look at the numbers Holmes has brought in at IOL, TE and DE/EDGE so far this offseason. I think the draft and health of the newbies will ultimately decide if the Lions look to bring any of these guys back, but the chance IMO is less than 5%. 13, 27, 57, 72, 86: I think the ship has sailed on Jalen Mills, Arthur Mallet, Trystan Colon, Jamarco Jones and Anthony Firsker . The majority of them were mid-year injury replacements or injured much of the 2025 season, so I don't really expect any of them back especially with the Free Agent Signings the Lions have made to backfill their roles. The re-signing of any of these players is likely at 0% unless something catastrophic happens with injuries. T-Minus 13 Days and counting down fast until the 2026 NFL Draft is upon us, and here at the Grey Manes, we have switched out focus almost exclusively to Draft Day. Last week, I ran a solo Mock Draft 1.0 through the PFFN Mock Draft Simulator and wrote about the journey on where I ended up. On the Pod last Tuesday , (7pm EST Tuesday Nights), Brent, Chris and I sat down and did a Live 1st Round Mock draft for all teams under some basic rules to see who the Detroit Lions would end up with as we picked for needs of those teams in front of them. It was pretty smooth sailing for the most part, but there were a few instances of some upset picks (player, not position) and one massive curveball late that made it an entertaining exercise. The Rules Consensus Picks of Francisco Mendoza to LA V at #1 and Arvell Reese to NYJ at #2 Alternating picks Starting at #3 in order of Dan, Brent & Chris No Trades Used the PFFN Consensus Rankings The Results The Detroit Lions Pick Analysis There was a bit of a spirited debate on who the Lions should take at #17, with disc ussions centering around S Thieneman, EDGE Mesidor, EDGE Faulk and OY Proctor. Lomu and Iheanachor were suggestions as possible OTs as well. We did come to the consensus of the players available; Alabama OT Kadyn Proctor is the choice and plugs in at RT, but if he struggles, he can play guard. Brent and I both agree that Vega Ioane would likely be the pick if he hadn't gone a few picks earlier to Tampa, although Chris was a bit skeptical on Ioane to the Lions. Chris made the point we have talked about that Penei Sewell is flexible enough to play either RT or LT so any OT is in play. Remainder of Draft Analysis First Upset was Chris taking The Ohio State WR Carnell T ate at #5 instead of Ohio State LB Sonny Styles or Edge David Bailey, scuttling the Browns pick of tate at #6, who went with The Ohio State LB instead Probably the biggest surprise was through Pick #8, there were some absolute perceived studs on the board in S Downs, EDGE Bain, CB Delane and OTs Freeling and Fano. At #9, there was some indecision, but had the Chiefs taking Edge Bain Jr to start getting some youth on their DL Brent went all in on the "Jets gonna Jets" by having them take ty Simpson a t #16. Thi s was a byproduct of no trades more than anything, as it's believed that Simpson will ge a target in Rd 1 of a trade up The next indecision point came with Pittsburgh at 21, where I went with S McNeil-Warren over WR Omar Cooper in a mild upset. The last "reach" was by Brent (again ?) at #28 tak ing LB Jacob Rodriguez who was projected more in the mid to late 2nd round .

As the days to the draft dwindle down and Wave 1 of Free Agency wraps, here at the Grey Manes we have turned our focus to Draft Season. In our first Mock (1.0), we are using Pro Football Network Mock Draft Simulator on the Consensus Player rankings for the AI portion of the draft. Below are the results for Rd 1. I had two trade proposals that came in at #17 , the 1st was form CAR offering 19 and 83 for 17. The second offer was from ARZ, who offered 34, 65 and a 2027 2nd for 17 and 222. On the Board at the time were TE Kenyon Sadiq, OT Monroe Freeling, S Dilon Thieneman, CBs Jermond McCoy & Avieon Terrell and OT Kadyn Proctor. So, despite my concern that Carolina was likely going after Freeling, I knew that Proctor would get past Minnesota so i was covered at OT if I accepted the CAR trade as proposed. While the ARZ offer was tempting, dropping 17 spots and missing out on a top-tier OT was too much to consider, even with the 2027 2nd tossed in. I wanted to see how desperate CAR was to move up two spots, so I hit them with a counter of 19, 83 and 158 and sent them 17 and 181 in return, and it was accepted. Surprisingly, CAR went for S Dilon Thieneman and MIN took WR Omar Cooper Jr, leaving me to choose from Freeling, both CBs, and Proctor. I ended up getting into a trade with PIT and sent them 19, 128 and 158 and received back 21 and 85. they took Freeling, and Dalals took McCoy, leaving me with Proctor to be the RT of the future for the Lions. Ultimately, I was able to use two trade backs to turn the Lions 17, 128, 158 & 181 (1048 pts) into OT Kadyn Proctor (21) along with picks 83, 85 & 158 (1168.2 pts), a net gain of 120.2 pts. Not the absolute best payoff, but I essentially moved back 4 places in rd. 1 by swapping a late 4th (128) and the last pick in the 5th (181) for two mid 3rds in 83 & 85. Freeling vs Proctor will be the big debate. but it was time to move Sewell to LT and bring in the RT of the future. 2026 NFL Mock Draft Simulator With Free Trades
