Campbell indicated it would last about an hour and be in shells, so similar to a walkthrough Practcie was reportedly sloppy with quite a few false starts on the OL Jack Campbell was highly disruptive today, including a sack, PBU, TFL on three of the nine one-v-one plays ion the situational work Vaki had one of the biggest plays in practice, a swing pass against the blitz he took for 20+ yards down the sideline Kick returners were Kennedy and Saylors Much of practice was scenario work with the full team on the opponent's side of the field. 1st Team - Offense was stifled by the defense for a three-and out including Jack Campbell on both 1st and 3rd downs making big plays 2nd Team - Ended with a 42-yard Jake Bates FG after Altmyer moved the team a little bit, but false start penalties and good defense (run stuff and two PBUs) ended the threat 1st Team - Offense fared better in their second go round, moving the ball on some quick slant completions, but Campbell blew up a play, then McNeil sniffed out a screen resulting in another Jake Bates 41-yard FG 2nd Team - Dobbs came in for one snap, resulting in a nice 20-yard-deep crossing route that ende din a Jackson Meeks TD, which was also the play Rakestraw was injured on Detroit Lions Jacob Saylors, Jackl Campbell, Jameson Willaims and Jackson Meeks Photos - Jeff Nguyen - Detroit Lions Dan Campbell Day 16 Press Conference Dan Campbell was back at the podium to start Day 16 and offered up some injury updates, talked about the work they have been getting in, several players that have been playing well and even took a few questions form German Media members leading up to the Patriots game later this year. You can check out the full transcript here and the quick hitters and video below: Dan Campbell Day 16 Press Conference Quick Hitters Practice will be in shells for about an hour with some red zone work Goff will not play against Washington, Dobbs will start, but both Dobbs and Altmyer will get equal reps Talked about Juice coming back from injury and getting thrust into being full time at center but has confidence he has been a center in the league and played snaps there before. Said the plan is to get Hutch and Campbell off the field more this year. Campbell likely will be on less special teams, and Hutch will get rotated out. Campbell said most difficult thing was convincing them to come off. Also said that if Campbell is off, then Nowaske or Rodriguez would likely be the Green Dot comms guy Asndered about body types and EDGEs in particular, centered around Eric O'Neil Took some ribbing about his old hair style (came up in the Brad Galli interview) and Cmapbell confirmed he is doen with the flowing locks. Took a couple questions form German media and discussed the travel plans and mentioned its a Lions home game in Germany and that the Lions are Germany's team also. Media Scrums with Players The Lions had media availability with QB Josh Dobbs Detroit Lions QB Josh Dobbs QB Josh Dobbs Josh, we just heard from Dan that you're going to get the start against Washington. Just initial thoughts about that and your time early time now with Detroit. Yeah, excited. Anytime you get an opportunity to start and play is always um a dream and a and a joy. So, I'm excited to go out there, compete. Um it's been good getting a chance to get to know everyone, learn the offense, get up to speed. So, it'll be a good opportunity to go out and play and compete at a high level. How much more com comfortable do you feel now, too, being able to watch the film from the first preseason game and what you want to work on? Anything that stood out to you specifically? I think the first preseason game was just good to get in the huddle, break the huddle, um call the play and execute. Um couple scoring drives and only two opportunities out there. So that felt good. Um so I definitely feel more comfortable. Um but still getting up to speed, right? Like I think um the first game was like two days and then you know now it's like maybe nine days. So we're still getting there and getting in there and practice getting our feet wet and stuff. So, um, as I said, like Saturday would be a great opportunity to do it, to execute, to run the offense and, uh, put up some points and have some fun, but, um, yeah, we're still getting up to speed, but, um, it's been a joy and the guys, the coaches, um, everyone here has been very welcoming, so I've enjoyed the process so far. Better than 72 hours of preparation this time for the second preseason game. Anything any benchmarks you specifically want to hit in this one? No, just go out and have a clean operation, good game. Like I think um all the guys want to compete at a high level is everyone's chance to show what we can do on the football field, right? And um guys are competing for jobs, guys are competing for opportunities, guys are competing for bigger roles. Um and so every time you step on the field, right, is to go out and execute and play at a high level. So the benchmark and stuff, everything gets handled if you kind of approach each play with the right mentality. And that's what I try to do. And it seems like that's what everyone does here. So I think it'll be a good day on Saturday. You've been in a couple different quarterback rooms in your career. How is this one maybe different? Yeah, I think um it's definitely different because this is the first time like me and uh JG were in the same high school class. So, we've known each other for a while. So, this is the first time I've really experienced that. So, I've really enjoyed um that just kind of like reminiscing, but also um there's a lot of high-level football conversations in the KB room. Um there's a lot of experience across the room between Tui and Brew and Mike and myself and obviously JG. So, um yeah, there's a lot of experience. I think Luke's done a great job of really absorbing all the information and performing well, giving his opportunities. So, it's been um it's been really cool. It's been a really good room thus far. I'm excited to continue to work with the guys. Yeah, it's a unique perspective, right? You're trying to help Luke get ready as well. He's just a rookie. What is that relationship like between the two of you and what the conversations are in that QB room? Yeah, definitely relationship's growing as I said, like with everyone, you know, it's only been here a week. So, um I'm no expert in this offense, right? I know I've played football, but I'm not an expert here yet. And that's the goal for me to learn and grow and have the conversations I can be ready whenever my number's called. And I think um just with any rookie, right, they're absorbing a lot of information very quickly. They're trying to make the most of every practice at every rep. And you know, first just serving as example of like what to do, how to carry yourself. And then when questions come about, just be open and willing to answer. So I'm always am a resource, but also as I said, like I'm still learning myself. So um I'm enjoying that process as well, soaking it all in and taking it day by day. I know the last time we talked with you, you said one of the defining features of working with Drew Petzing is just his communication and how clear it is. He's always one step ahead. Anything specifically that sticks out with him in Detroit or any parts of this offense that you really enjoy? Yeah, I think um well, we obviously we have some great weapons, like the best players in the league, so just enjoy watching them practice and perform and make plays. Um and so I think like watching how he uses those guys um in specific roles to really accentuate their skill set will be a blast. So, he's going to uh do a great job. It's going to be good. It's going to be really good. You might have already covered it, but you're getting the start, you know, here Saturday. What does what does that mean to you? What do you need to show to lock up a roster spot if you feel that that's in jeopardy? Oh, uh my goal is to be myself. You know, go out, execute the offense, getting out of the huddle and perform at a high level. That's always my goal, whether it's practice or a game. So, I'm excited for the opportunity. Any opportunity to play football is um a joy and a blessing. So, I'm going to enjoy it, but make the most of it at the same time. Now that you've been in it a few weeks, how similar is this offense to sort of what you ran under Drew a few years ago? I would say a few weeks is probably a stretch at this point. It's been nine days. So, um, but it's similar. There's similar and different in the same, right? Like there's different players and, uh, they've been playing high level offense here for the years even before I was here, obviously before Drew got here. Um, so yeah, like I think um, Drew's adjusted his playbook to fit the scheme as any really good coach will do. And so, uh, for me, right, like there are changes and nuances and, um, so I'm still getting up to speed on them, which I know I will at the right time, but, you know, still just taking it day by day. What's the change language? Is it actually in some of the nuances of the routes? What is the change, I guess, that you're A little bit of everything, right? Like the players are completely different here, right? The team's built differently. So, you're going to build your offense around these guys and their skill set. Just first impressions of Luke Altmyr Yeah, he's been good, man. I heard I heard he's been doing a really good job at practice before I got here. So, I've been impressed. I know um he's responded when he's had adversity. He's made plays and made throws when they're there. So, I think he's doing a really good job of grasping it. Um it can be a lot for a rookie, but he does a good job getting in and out of the huddle. Um which is just a little thing that sets you up for a successful play. So, I've been impressed. And um I know we have we have a has a really wealth of knowledge in that QB room. He's done a great job tapping into that. Just last thing I got for you, you know, this stage of the offseason, right, two weeks till the first game, what do you do as a vet? How do you sort of get yourself ready for where you need to be week one? Um, take it day by day. You know, that's really it. Don't look ahead. Just take it day by day and focus on the playbook, what you can control and maximizing every rep you get. The Lions second preseason game is home at Ford Field against the Washington Commanders on Thursday Aug 22nd at 12pm. Transcripts are created with an assist from AI

  • Dan Campbell Camp Day 16 Press Event

Dan Campbell Camp Day 16 Press Event 08/20/26 Dan Campbell kicked off his Day 16 press event with some injury notes, plans for today, and took some questions form German press members about the upcoming regular season Patriots game in Germany. Injury Summary New/Updates: Sam LaPorta took a shot to the hip in the night practice, and it flared up. Hope to have him for Week 1 Jimmy Rolder will NOT be ready by the time camp ends (four more practices) and may linger into the season. Ben Bartch is in concussion protocol No Changes/Updates: Branch - Potentially Early September Kerby - Likely will linger into the season on same timeline as Branch Peyton Turner - Has not practiced all camp despite a "minor" stiff back Giovani Manu - Added to NFI/Injury List due to previously undisclosed injury form offseason Damone Clark - Clark's injury is undisclosed but has missed multiple practices now Cade Mays - Mays is sidelined for 8-10 weeks with fractured Wrist (Target Week 5) Mekhi Wingo - Concussion protocol Isiah Pacheco - MCL Strain - Target Week 1 return Quick Hitters Practice will be in shells for about an hour with some red zone work Goff will not play against Washington, Dobbs will start, but both Dobbs and Altmyer will get equal reps Talked about Juice coming back from injury and getting thrust into being full time at center but has confidence he has been a center in the league and played snaps there before. Took a couple questions form German media and discussed the travel plans and mentioned its a Lions home game in Gemrany and that the Lions are Germany's team also. Dan Campbell Press Event Transcript Opening Statement: You know, they're under stress. Uh, they get tired, have to work with each other. You got to stay on top of your fundamental. I just thought it was great work. So, I'm pleased. Backed way off today. Shells hour long, a little bit in the red zone. Uh, just get the blood flowing and then and get them out of here. Questions? Ask you about uh the backup quarterback rotation. I thought maybe we'd see a little bit more of Josh Jobs out there, but still kind of really limited those practice reps. Is that competition for the backup job still wide open and where's Dobs kind of fitting in this mix right now? It is still open and uh you know I see we're going to start dos this game you know so yes Dave golf's not playing um so we we'll start dos but they're both going to play equal amounts is kind of the plan here between he and Altmyer. And what you need to see from the first pre preseason game to the second preseason game to feel like okay we're heading in the right way to the regular season like this is this is I like this what You just need to feel like you things are cleaned up that you're not making the same mistake twice you know some of these particularly these young guys these young players like okay what did you learn from the last game that's really what you're looking for is there growth when the lights are on like you can in in practice you can see growth you can see guys getting better okay now you for under the lights Thursday night at Cincinnati and now where is it at? Hey Sheila, what's going on? How you doing back there? Steve, what's up? Okay, all good. How am I doing? Um but yeah, that that's what you're looking for. That's what you're you just want to see the growth, man. Are they learning from this and it's not too big for them and uh and they can take the coaching to the field when it really matters, you know, in game time. Just to follow up on Justin's question, two things. The um because you got such good work the last couple days, does that change your plan for playing any other starters uh Saturday? Uh it could it could, but I'm not quite there yet. I just know I don't see Goff playing. Yep. And then with Dobbs, is there a specific reason why he hasn't gotten many reps yet? Is that just you got to, you know, soak culture with all the work? Well, I think it was some of it is look, Dobs is a bright guy. He's played in this league. Uh, but also, man, just making sure got him up to speed. Uh, being true to that and also Luke's a young player, but he's promising, you know, and getting him trying to soak him with reps. So, it was just kind of a little bit of that, but, uh, we'll get a look at Dos here and let him go. Do you think there's a chance you could see Jimmy Rolder back on the practice field before the end of camp? I know you guys only have four practices left. Uh, it's probably unlikely. He's doing well. He is I mean he is progressing well, but I think it it'll be hard pressed to see him next week early in the early in the season. I do. Yep. I do way Back through all our conversations back through May and I don't know how but nobody's mentioned Eric O'Neil at any point but obviously he had the really nice rush against starters in game and then the pick six and the scrimmage the other day. um maybe doesn't fit the body type you've typically had on the edge, but what have you liked about him since bringing him in? And where do you kind of see his growth at this stage in camp? He he's a guy that makes plays every day. Um you know, he is he's pretty sneaky. He's crafty. He's a little bit of um him is what is he? You know, that's what and we're still trying to answer that a little bit, man. Where does he really fit? What really suits him? you know, it's not stack backer, but yet it can it be on the line kind of an OLB or is it D-End like a rush D-End? I know this. He's smart. He plays hard. He's pretty crafty. Um, you know, he he's got some tools in his toolbox as a rusher and he just kind of makes plays every day. So, uh, it's hard to he's another guy it's hard to ignore him, you know, and I don't want to say quiet. I think I mentioned him before. I mean, he's you saw the interception the other day, you know, in that that night practice we had and he made, you know, had a good rush. He had some good plays in the Cincinnati game. So, he's intriguing and some of it is really fit, man. Where does he where does he and special teams, by the way, he makes plays in special teams every day. So, yes, we like him. Jack played more than 99% of the defensive staffs last year. Uh how much is that uh attributed to the fact that he's got the green dot and you know how much has he become indispensable essentially for the defense? Yeah, he's just too good of a player. I mean it's you know look that here's the here's the good news with Jack. Jack is a u a big physical human being for the middle linebacker position which means he can take a beating and he can deliver a beating and you that's hard in today's game. Um, so to have a guy like him, I mean, he can he can take on a lot of reps. Not everybody can do that, but he's too valuable. I mean, he just he does everything for us. There is a chance we pull back on some of these special teams reps, you know, because we do we need him on defense, and he's not coming off the field. He's just too valuable for that. And in light of that, who if he is off the field, who would have like who would be the communication hub, I guess, or you know, in light of like him being out? I mean, would who would have that green dot? You're talking doom right now. Don't do that. Um, no. I mean, look, there's a number of guys we like. Um, you know, Rodrigo could take the green dot. Um, Bachi could take the green dot. Um, now there's a chance Nowaske takes the green dot. Nowaske had the green dot the other day. Um, so we've got guys that can do that, but that's not going to happen. You know, I guess if his shoe comes off, yes, one of those guys can do that. On the subject of snaps and reps, Hutch was the only D-Line last year to play over a thousand snaps. You got some fresh legs there now in and DJ and Derek Moore, those guys here. Is there a chance to maybe get Hutch a few extra blows per game? and how much could that potentially benefit him over the course of a game, but also over the course of a 17 game season? Yeah, we'd like to be able to do that and you really just alluded to it. You know, some of the you know, the what went into that, the wise, the he's another guy it's hard to take him off the field because he does so much for us and he doesn't he doesn't get tired. He doesn't wear down. Uh he just keeps coming. But we also know, man, it if we can take some off of him, it's only going to help. uh not only now but long term. So that's in our heads. Uh now it's a whole different story trying to get him off the field. All right. But we'll figure that out. Um cuz he doesn't want to come out and uh that's a good problem to have. But it's in our mind and that's why it's important for a guy like Derek Moore to come on. You know, we this you know, he just got back and the good news is he's gotten you know, two good days of work. Um, you know, that's positive, but he's got a long way to go. He just needs reps. Derek Moore needs reps, but we like what we see for the limited amount of snaps he's had so far, but it'll be big. You got a couple more days with Juice at center. Just what have you seen from him as he's kind of get more reps there and work with Jared more. Yeah. Well, I think it's been um probably what you would imagine a little bit. you know, he just he just got back. Um, and now he's exclusive center and it's just there's been a little bit of we got to kick some of the rust off of here. You know, we got to um you know, we got to get a little bit of that off there and let those guys work together. But I did think yesterday was better, you know, and particularly in a lot of that situational work to where they got to be on the same page with some stuff. Um, and the rest of the O line, I think those only help. Like I say, Juice has played center. he's played in real games. Uh, you know, he's suited for it and it's just really about he getting up to speed with Goff and some of our calls and then those, you know, being on the same page with the guards and everything, but uh time on task, you know, we got time to get there. So, you know, I like I said, I see Juice playing in this game with that old line and uh and so this will be good work for them. You mentioned uh Ben Bartch as a challenger for that starting left guard job. We haven't seen him out there the last two days. Obviously, he missed some time at the start of camp. I'm just wondering if you can provide an update on him and then with only four practices left, do you think there's a time for him to kind of make you feel comfortable with him winning that job? It's a good question. He's in concussion protocol, so he got dinged, I guess, a couple of days ago. Um and so no, it's hard to say that. you know, it's real hard to say that over four practices or whatever. Doesn't mean it can't. Um, but that that window is shrinking uh right now, you know, so the most important thing is for him to uh get to where he feels right again and to where he can go. You know, he's healthy, he feels good, and he can start practicing and then we'll see. But no, I mean, I think that that window is closing quickly. Do you feel like you have the body types and depth in the edge room to kind of mix and match the season based on situations with where at in the edge room? The edge. Yeah. Defensive. I got you. I think all of those Yeah. As it pertains to edge, I'm going to say all of it between the interior and on the on the perimeter cuz I look, Wonnum has had a really good camp. Like uh I would love where Wanom's at right now, man. He's another one of these guys. He just he's a smart football player. He's crafty. He knows how to use his length. Uh he's got a couple of different rushes that are a little bit of a problem and um plays the run all. So between that, Hutch, I think Derrik Moore, the more he just needs reps, you know, that's a good thing. And then we got Lim, you know, he's been a tear in the middle. Um and that hadn't slowed down at all. That that's just kept coming. So, you know, any one of those improved just a little bit. You know, you get a little bit more press up there. And by the way, Tyliek is having a good camp. You know, um, you get a little bit more push up the middle or get an edge and flush the quarterback to want them or I'm talking about, you know, half a yard a step or whatever that is to hutch or want them, that's good news. You know, Wanom pushes a little bit, he's pushing a Hutch. Hutch pushes a little bit, you're pushing a W. So, any little bit and I think all of those guys are just going to elevate each other's games. So, I like where we're at. Dan, do you have an update on Sam LaPorta? I do. So Sam the other night he kind of he got hit in the hip. Um and it just it flared up a little bit. It's a little aggravated, but we feel good long term about him. We're just we're resting for a little bit here and letting it calm down. What's that? Something that could go into the season or Well, I don't know, Dave. I don't know. I feel like we'll be okay, but I don't know. You mentioned a couple weeks ago um you and Brad were going to try to avoid doing a total reveal till the end sort of maybe as a bit of a change. Why I guess why did you decide to do that or whose idea was it? No, I mean I think that we we've kind of always been that way a little bit. You know, we just um Well, that's not true. I know where you're going. Normally, we all get together with the scouts' coaches in front of each other. We'll go, you know, whatever once a week or after the first two weeks, then we go. But I think it was a little bit more just for efficiency's sake. And I see what I see. He's getting what he's getting, what he sees, scouts, and then hey man, as this thing starts to get a little bit closer, let's get together and kind of start kicking some things around. So I think it was just it's a little bit of that probably more efficiency like when you do those big meetings, man, those things go for four or five hours and man, you there's a lot of things that like we don't need to talk about Pane Sewell again, you know? And um and so I I just think there there's some things to where this is just a better way to do it because look at the end it's about Brad and myself and I know what I see. He knows what he sees and then us coming together. Now that being said, when I told you that the other day, probably 30 minutes later, I went up there and we uh we were talking about it. So um is it sort of like keeping a clear vision for yourself and separating those visions at all? Well, I think that helps and I think that's a little of it. Let's not get, you know, cuz you can get skewed, you know, that that's human nature. If you're in there with the coaches and you get nothing but coach's perspective, then you're that's all it is and that's the last thing you hear. And just like if I heard nothing but the scouts, you could be skewed by that a little bit, you know, and so it just kind of keeps you independent and stay true to the film, what you see, what do you see in practice, and then go from there. Dan, real quick, sorry. I was watching your interview with Brad a couple nights ago and the picture of you guys from 18 years ago, which is incredible. What would it take for you to bring that flow back this season? Well, you know, it grew out a little bit last year. I had it just a little bit. Boy, it's not the same. It just it's I don't know. I don't even know how to describe it. So, um I think I'm done with that. I think those days are done. Yeah. Good question, though. Our last few joining us from Germany. Yes. Hi. Hello from Germany. Um I know it's early days but can you tell us a little bit about how you prepare for this game against the Patriots and also get us a little bit excited? We are already but even more. Yeah. So, I think it's unique because it's, you know, that game will be one of these we're going to try to prepare here and get a lot of our game plan, get the guys ready, and then for us, we're getting on the plane at night. Um, call it Thursday night for a Sunday game. Flying, we land, we stay awake, and now we're right into the next practice to get ready, you know, and the players will have just a little bit of downtime the day before the game to kind of check the sights out and get a lay of the land and all that. Um, but they're dealing with that, too. The Patriots are going through the same thing. But as far as like going, we're excited to go over there, you know, because look, we're Germany's team, too. So, we're not just Americans, we're Germany's team. Um but we're looking forward to it and uh you know St. Brown's um you know he's got lineage and heritage over there and I that means something to us too and so we're pretty excited about going over there and playing. It's going to be a home game for us. Yeah. Uh the German fans are really excited like Tiana said. Do you have some words for them maybe? For who? I'm sorry. For the German fans I think I just said it. We're Germany's team. We're excited to go over there and uh you know, we want to we want to represent and we want to show you about um you know, NFL football and the way that we think it should be played um and put on a show. CB Ennis Rakestraw and Isaac TeSlaa both had another great day, continuing to stack good practices after struggling in Cincinnati Derrick Moore had himself a day by all accounts. He was lining up all over the line, mainly in 3rd down packages, and notched at least two sacks in dills while being disruptive in his limited plays. Hutchinson, mentioned Tuesday by Campbell as being so disruptive they sometimes let the plays just go to get work in, was doing the same thing all day. One item that caught those in attendance eyes, Hutch was knocked on his back (a de-cleater) by Tate Ratledge in a 4th and 10 situation allowing Goff to pick up the first down to Williams. Continue to observe sacks coming from blitzes and especially the secondary guys, including both CB and Safety spots The practice ended with multiple situation drills (six) Situation 1 - 1st Team - End of 1st Half, 3:31 on clock three timeouts and ball on own 23-yard line Borom holding call (spelling Penei who was ona breather) Gibbs for 20 behind a Blake Miller block 21-yard completion to TeSlaa Barnes covered Gibbs on a wheel route (incomplete) leaving the offense in FG range Situation 2 - 2nd Team - End of 1st Half, 3:31 on clock three timeouts and ball on own 32-yard line This was a three-and-out situation with Rakestraw getting a sack on second down Situation 3 - 1st Team - End of Game, :59 on clock, down 4 pts at own 49-yard line McNeil forced a throwaway (beat Mahogany quickly) Goff to St. Brown for 13 in flat Goff to St Brown for 20 on seam route (beat Clark and Abney) Last play was from 18-yard line with the defese guarding the end zone, which ende dup being a Goff to St Brown just short of the goal line and he was stopped just shy of scoring. Amaris Brown - No mention today Melvin Priestly - Mentioned as stoning Tyler Lacy in one-on-one rep but getting driven deep into the pocket by Ben Stille Detroit Lions Alim McNeil, Thomas Harper and Jameson Williaams Photos - Jeff Nguyen/Nicole Scharff - Detroit Lions Dave Fipp Day 15 Press Conference Dave Fipp held serve on Day 15 of training camp and he covered a bunch of topics relate to how the STs guys can make the team, some unsolicited praise for a couple of players and the transcript of the items he was asked and answered is below: Dave Fipp Day 15 Press Event Opening Statement: Oh man, I can't believe I'm here. I'll just say that. Uh, just being coaching in this league, there's nothing like it. Uh, I feel like a kid in a candy store. I was thinking about that before I came down here. When I was a kid, my brothers and I, we'd ride our bike down the street couple miles away. We'd beat a little candy. We'd, you know, eat share. Hey, can I get one of yours? You give me one of mine. U, it was incredible. But it's the same thing today. I feel very fortunate and lucky working for a head coach that I'm working for, being a part of this organization, working with these players out on the practice field. There's really nothing like it for me. So, I'm thankful to be here and uh whatever questions you guys got, I'll do my best. What was your candy of choice? Uh it was Coke bottles. The little Coke gummies. Coke bottle gummies. Those things are pretty strong. The red jelly beans. Those ones, too. That was it. Yeah. You'll have a lot to say. I guess it comes down to special teams, the guys on the back end of the roster of how much they're contributing on special teams. Uh do you feel kind of like a lynch pin in that way of in the decision-m process of hey, you know, what do you think of this guy, that guy? Yeah, I think uh I tell the players, I mean, in the old days, I felt like, yeah, there was a handful of guys that they just made the roster on special teams. And I feel like uh time over the last handful of years has changed a little bit. We've had more injuries collectively probably as a league. You're playing more players throughout the course of a year. Um, I tell the players now like you're going to make the team probably in two phases. You're going to have to play on offense and special teams or defense and special teams. And I know this, the more that you can do, the better in modern football. If all you can do is play on special teams, you're going to have to be really, really special to make it just on that. Now, you have to have some function. Now, if you're very, very good on special teams and you can help a little bit on defense, you know, you got a chance. Or you're really good on defense and don't do much on special teams, you still got a chance there. But I think for the most part, we're looking for guys who can help in all areas. Um, and uh, we end up playing a lot of players throughout the course of the year. Uh, when they ask my opinion on guys, I'm going to give them my opinion and tell them to the best of my knowledge what I think how a guy will play for us. Has there been a guy or two who stood out, who's taken that message to heart, maybe a younger guy, who has understood how valuable special teams is to getting him on? Yeah, I think you know the one thing we got uh you know we are replacing some good players and there's also a lot of good competition out there. I would definitely say that and there's a lot of players at a lot of positions like linebacker. There's four guys probably you got Eric Hunter, you got Bachie, you got Reeder, and you got Ogbongbemiga. Um these four players, they can all play. Uh you got Hunter's the young guy, the other guys have all played in the league. Um and uh it's very competitive. So you're looking for who's going to play the most or be the most dependable player who can help the most on defense and special teams probably the combination of the two. Um so that's a competitive spot. I think the wide receiver spots very competitive. You got Martin, you got Black, you got uh Lucky Jackson who's made some plays. Um and these are all down the line guys. And then obviously those guys above them. You have the returner position with Kennedy and Dortch. Really a palm returner. Lovett fitting into that a little bit, but really probably Kennedy and Dortch right now in my opinion. Um, so there's a number of positions. The safety position, you know, is really up in the air right there. Who's going to play there? Obviously with the injuries to the safety position, who's coming back? And so, yeah, there's a lot to process Wanted to follow up on Hunter. We see you match him up a lot with Nowaski in in practice and that seems like a pretty good challenge with a guy that's proven at this level and from all signs like the rookie holding his own. I'm just curious how much he's caught your eye how I maybe more advanced he might be than you anticipated coming from Morgan State. Yeah, I would say he's definitely caught our eye. He's caught everybody's eye. I know that. You know the challenge for young guys is and we match guys up with a lot of different players. We do that. We do veteran on veteran, veteran on rookie, you know, um smaller guy on bigger guy, bigger guy on smaller guy. You're trying to gain a lot of information this time of year so that when you get in the season, you know who can handle what matchups. Um for him, he's definitely done something probably every practice where you're like, "Wow, he did a great job there." Or he stood out. Um and that's really what you're looking for. Um now that being said, he's also made some big mistakes, too, you know, and it's like, man, um how much of that can you weather? Well, when you're talking about the punt team, not a lot, you know. So, those guys got to go out there and execute. They got to protect the passer. It's going to be a blitz most of the time that they're picking up and they got to be 100%. Um, and you can't have a sack or for us a block punt. Um, sorry. So, anyways, hey state. So, anyway, yeah, he's done some good things. Um, and I would say he's right in the middle of a competition. The advantage those other guys have as they've played. So, they've been through that stuff. I think Belichick, you know, I love Belichick, but he used to have a thing where there'd be no rookies playing on the punt team. You know, he just didn't want that to happen because he knew a mistake in that phase is devastating. Um, so if anytime you have to put a young player out there like that, you got to be careful. Um, and that's his challenge that he's fighting. The other guys have experience, but you know, they haven't in some ways flashed as much as he has at certain things, too. So, um, it'll be interesting. So, sorry, man. So, probably about half the league doesn't have both kick returner and punt returner playing the same guy playing both positions. Just curious why you think that is. And do you believe maybe you have a guy here that can do both those things? Yeah. Well, I would say number one is uh on kick return, you have to have two players back there. So, it can't just be the punt returner anyway. Um, so the punt returner may be a part of that, but he may not. Um, I think it really just depends on the roster, the makeup, who you have. Uh, I do know that like if you were asking me preference, I would say I would like a bigger, stronger guy on kickoff return. And most of that's just durability. I mean, those guys take some shots. Uh, and I would say there's a little bit more contact with those guys. It's a little bit more like a run play than it is ball out in space. That's a little bit more like a punt return. Um, so it's definitely difficult to find a guy who does both. That being said, it also depends on the makeup of your roster. You might have a top wide out or one of your top wide outs, you want to return punts, but you don't want them to return kickoffs. That could be part of that decision. So, a lot that goes into it. Could Dortch play that role. Yeah, I think, you know, Dortch has done a little bit of both. He's done more punt return than kickoff return, but he's certainly done both there. Um, I think TK can do some of both. Um, we've seen him do that for us, too. So, you're talking about two guys that could do that. Then it also for us would turn back to who else do we have available on game day and what's the best combination 11 we can get and in that conversation now you know I know he's not out there right now but does Pacheco figure into that you know does somebody like that now maybe you could have Pacheco and whoever that other running back is back there and you get two running back bodies and you don't play the palm returner back there so just always to make the best 11 also play the best you can throughout the course of the whole season too not any one game. What do you see as the biggest benefit to having that operation with the with the holder, the snapper, and the kicker now going into three third season? I see it's pretty rare that that you return those guys. There's not maybe a little bit of turnover there. Just the biggest benefit of that. Yeah, it's obviously great having all three of those guys back. I you know how I feel about all three of them. I think all three are great players. Um they're very passionate about what they do and they really work hard and become better every year and really every day, which I love. Um but uh yeah, it's a benefit to them because now you know they can get in a good rhythm and routine, work together. They know each other's idiosyncrasies and nuances. Um you're not adjusting your rhythm for a different snapper and uh things like that. So I think it's helpful for them, too, but it's also comforting for us. Dave, can you expand a little bit on what you like about Pacheco beyond the body type as a kick returner and then um not just at return, but on special teams, what does what does Jacob Sailor mean to you on special? Yeah. Um, so Pacheco, I mean, no, he did a little bit of it when he was younger in Kansas City, so you seen that. He had some good plays back there. Uh, more than anything, you just watch him run the ball on offense. Like, I think Gibbs would make a good returner, too. But, uh, um, anyways, but yeah, so anytime if a guy's dynamic with the ball in his hands on offense and there's a chance that translates um, on special teams, too. Um and uh so that's kind of really what we see in Pacheco obviously when he gets healthy maybe we can get him back there and then some of it depends on his role on the roster and game day and etc and playing the course 17 years or 17 games and all that. Um and then Saylors, I mean I love Saylors. I loved him a year ago. He came in and really helped us out um on special teams and I thought he played very well for us on teams a year ago. Um, and then to see him go out there and play like that on offense. I was super happy for him in the last preseason game because to me, he is a deserving kid of that attention. He really has gone under the radar but been a very good player for us on special teams um last year. So, I'm encouraged with that for him. Seen this kind of massive Won't give you Gibbs as a return man, huh? Yeah. I don't know. When you put the ball in his hands, a lot happens. So, I know that. So, we've seen kind of this massive developmental jump from Ahmed Hassan on defense. Seems like special teams, there's a lot more precision and control needed uh with a player like that. How have you seen his growth with your groups in particular? Yeah. Um he does a great job. I mean, the one thing about him, Ed, is he goes out there and he works his tail off. He's going to fight and compete. Uh and you love that about him. He's tough as heck. He's very competitive. Um he takes everything personal. Um but uh you know one thing that is a challenge for him on special teams a lot of our plays are wide open space plays you know when you're playing defensive line you're in a tighter confined box. Um we we've utilize some players like that in the past on kickoff coverage here. Um so maybe that's an area he can help us out. But really when you're talking like punt return uh it's going to be difficult. And then can he match up a guy on kickoff return? Defenders are used to getting away from blocks not blocking as much. Um, so some guys are better at that than others. Um, and he's definitely worked at it for us. Um, so I those types of players to me are more luxury type players. Like if he's available on game day and he made the roster and he's on the team and he's playing and the defense wants him, um, could I find a role for him that would help elevate the players around him and make him one of the best 11 guys to be on the field on any given play? Then yeah, that's to me like a luxury. um those other linebackers, man, those guys got to play. You just don't have any other bodies. So, um certain positions kind of more valuable to me than others. Um I would consider that one a luxury but love what he does. Saw you, uh kind of joking around with Jameson when he was walking around the field the other day. The social team also put out a clip where you were wearing his jewelry during practice. I'm just curious what kind of trickle down effect his joy has on the rest of the team from your perspective. Yeah, I mean he I mean J Mo is awesome. You guys know I've always loved him. I love the fact that he played Gunner. Uh you guys gave me hell because we were going to play him as a gunner. Um but uh but uh no, I love him. He loves the game of football, you know, and I would say that's probably the biggest thing. Uh you know, you're looking for guys who can stand out or make an impact or jump off the film um and do it. You know, the only way I could relate it to you in this off season or actually not too long ago, uh Chris Stapleton played a concert in Fort Field. So, I went to the concert and there's all these people leading up to it. The first guy, I don't know what his name, something Allen or Allen Stellin or something like that was incredible. Chris Stapleton, obviously, when you hear the guy sing live, you're like, "Oh my gosh, she just jumps off the stage." Um, Laney Wilson, I'm a huge Laney Wilson fan. Uh, I think she's incredible. I love her story. I feel like she's just one of those people who made it on her own. And then I'm watching the Laney Wilson show though and there was somebody comes up and this lady was jamming on this guitar and I'm like damn who is that? And then all of a sudden she's playing the electric violin in front of everybody and this person jumped off the stage the way she was playing that instrument with a passion and energy and I'm like damn I mean this is she's got it. I mean she has definitely got it. So I looked up her name. Her name was Sav Madigan. She's from Traverse City, Michigan. And I'm like, dude, she's got it. And really, that's what you're looking for in a player. So, like Jamo, he's got it, man. Gibbs, he's got it. You put the ball in their hand, it jumps off the film, you see it. Um, and that's what you're looking for in players, man. This time of year, who can jump off the film and make you go, gosh darn it, like I got to look that person up. Who are they? I want them on this roster. That helps you on teams for you. Who's jumped off the film on teams for you? So Tay Martin's jumped off the film every day. Bunch of these guys, Hunter's jumped off the film doing something good. Bachie played some good football. All these guys I've mentioned, Reeder's done some good things, you know. Um and that's why I say it's a very competitive situation here. Um but uh yeah, it's a good question. I can't give it all away. Media Scrums with Players The Lions had media availability with EDGE Derrick Moore Detroit Lions EDGE Derrick Moore EDGE Derrick Moore How anxious are you to get on the field and the game? Man, I'm so excited. I can't wait for it. You like literally I can't wait for it. What are the hard parts for you right now? Uh say the hard parts, you know, is just really, you know, just trying to come out here and compete against the best every day. You know, go against guys like Blake Pne and the rest of the guys on the old line, you know, just going against them and just trying to bring my best self out every day cuz I know they going to bring their best uh competitiveness out. So just trying to be the better self, uh better me every day and just competing every day and going against them going against them guys. Where do you think you're better player now than maybe day one at training camp? Uh better player now and I say probably like my comfort level just coming out here being able to be com comfortable you know within you know the play calls um you know going against the competition that I'm going against you know just being able to just be relaxed and just play 100% not thinking too much. Can you walk us through the sack you had? I think it was against Blake. Both you were hunching the back field that third down play. Uh it was just it was just third down play. You know, it was just at that point, you know, you just got to get off the ball. You know, also you got Hutch on the opposite side. So, you got to get that before he get there. So, you know, sometime that be my mindset, you know, when I'm out there with Hutch or anybody else, you know, just get back there before they can because we got we got a deep Elon R that can get to the ball. So, you know, that's my mindset on every third down, really on every passing down, just get to the ball best as I can because I know it's other guys getting there before me. Derek, is that a sneak peek of what things could look like this season, you and Aiden in the back field? Hey, I ain't going to say too much, but it couldn't can be, but no matter what, who whoever's out there, it's going to make it all look the same. What do you think you know, that week and a half or whatever you were, what do you think you missed and how did you close the gap, you know, to sort of finish strong? Um, I think the only thing I probably miss, you know, just being out here on the field, that's it, you know, but mentally I was still engaged, you know, uh, watching film, asking questions to the older guys and also to the coaches. Uh, just so when I get back out here, I can just go 100%. In what ways do you think a preseason game can really help you feel like an NFL player? Uh, it can help me a lot, you know, just getting back into the rhythm. Um, you know, I've been out for two weeks, you know, so getting back into the rhythm, uh, being able to go against different competition and seeing different looks and different things like that and just showing everybody, you know, what I'm capable of doing. Seems like you're getting a lot of work on third down. What do you think you bring to that down that makes you such a weapon on that down, I guess? Um, you know, I feel like coach, he look at me as a guy who can get to the ball. I feel like that's what he want to do on get on third down is get to the ball. Get to the He looking for guys that can get to the ball. So, You know, I just want to be one of them guys that, you know, he trusts. I just want to be one of them guys that coach uh Jeff trust and I can get to the ball. That's it. I saw your wheels that pass rap against Gibbs. All of a sudden, I'm writing down a number. Who's keeping up with him? How quick you got to be to make that read? Hey, you got to be real quick for that right there. I I Hey, that was probably that was my first time going against Gibbs like that open field. So, next time I know to get out there a little a little sooner. So, I'll be ready for it next time. What have you been able to learn from going against Penei? Uh, you know, going against like guys like Pane, you know, you just got to bring your every day. Literally, excuse me for my language, but like you got to bring your every day because he coming every day literally. And he not, no matter who he is, he not going to slow down or take a take a break or take a play off or anything like that. He coming every play. So you got to be you got to be ready to trap your up and go against him cuz he bringing his every play. Can you feel yourself leveling up from those cumulative reps against Pay? Yes. I actually like going against guys like Penei and Blake, you know, just guys that's going to bring it every play that's going to compete and even if you win or lose, like they not satisfied with it. You know, they trying to get better each and every play. The Lions second preseason game is home at Ford Field against the Washington Commanders on Thursday Aug 22nd at 12pm. Scrimmage Notes Scrimmage Team A - 1st Team Offense/2nd Team Defense Scrimmage Team B - 2nd Team Offense/1st Team Defense As mentioned, the defense had itself a night during the mock scrimmage by being disruptive all evening with at least seven sacks and three INTs including pick six by rookie UDFA O'Neil. O'Neil picked off an Altmyer screen pass by getting his hands up and tipping it to himself and rumbling about five yards into the endzone. He also had a sack, all of which comes on the heels of his TFL and QB Hit and being all over the field against the Bengals Rakestraw had an INT, TFL and a PBU, but also was caught up in a pick on a slant to Kennedy resulting in a TD for the offense. Despite that play, reports are he had a really good scrimmage on the heels of the poor preseason game. Other defenders that were noted for special playes were LBs Devin White (sack and many tackles) and Trevor NNowaske (two sacks.) The Offense did make some plays, including the previously mentioned Kennedy TD, a Sam LaPorta TD of ~25-yards on a bootleg and a 19-yard TD form Altmyer to Lucky Jackson ona sideline route. Final score was 24-7 first for Scrimmage team A (1st team Offense) It was noted by many in attendance that Kelvin Shephard and Amon-Ra St Brown have the same "talking" relationship that Duce Staley and Aaron Glenn did on Campbell's early staff. Dan Campbell played "official" and was throwing flags when he saw fit Depth Chart Observations by Position Group OL 1st Team OL was Sewell-Mahogany-Scruggs-Ratledge -Miller Scruggs was on a snap count and McLaughlin was worked in at 1st team OC Scruggs and Goff reportedly had multiple botched snaps in the scrimmage 2nd team had OC Niese, OG Priestley, OG Mason Miller, OT Colby Sorsdal and OT Frazier Frazier was playing multiple positions again on 2nd team OL RBs Pecking order was Gibbs, Vaki, Saylors, Smalls Vaki had a good day including nice elusiveness, tough runs up the middle and a 19-yard scamper that led to a FG Saylors and Small were splitting 2nd team reps WRs Kennedy joined TeSlaa and St Brown with the 1ones with Willaims out Lovett, Cunningham and Jackson were getting many of the 2nd team reps TE LaPorta, Wright and Ty Conklin appear to be the pecking order DL Hutch, McNeil, Williams and Wonnum were starters (with Lacy as Big end) LBs Barnes and Campbell were 1st team Devin White and Rodriguez were second team Safety Same players in same roles Nickel Abney is getting first team reps in the battle with Izien and McCreary It appears that Abney, McCreary and Izien are in a real battle for the Nickel role, and per Campbell's presser, it's likely that a different guy will trot out there based on the scenario needed from the position during the game Outside CBs Rakestraw was 2nd Team along with Dorsey Returners N/A Gunners N/A Rookies Blake Miller - Led the way on a 21-yard Gibbs pickup by pulling around left end Derrick Moore -Combined with Lucas to force Altmyer to step up into a sack by Ben Stille Jimmy Rolder - Has been observed working and running off to the side getting closer to a return Keith Abney II - Appears to be forcing his way into both the nickel and outside CB conversations with good play. Has been getting 1st team nickel reps the last few practices. Had a good PBU on St Brown in the scrimmage Kendric Law - Done for season with a torn ACL suffered win OTA Week 2 practices Skyler Gill-Howard - Was in the Training Camp Photos for Day 14. Noted as having a QB Gurry forcing a bad pass form Goff in scrimmage. Tyre West - No mention today UDFAs Luke Altmyer - Was the victim of the INTs by Eric O'neil, Chuck Clark and Ennis Rakestraw, but had a nice TD toss later in practice Miles Kitselman - Placed on Reserve/Injured with leg injury and is out for season Anthony Lucas - Combined with Hassanein on a coverage sack of Josh Dobbs in the scrimmage. Was noted as forcing Altmyer (along with Moore) to step up into a sack by DT Stille. Erick Hunter - No mention today Eric O'Neil - Scored a pick-six in the scrimmage and combined with Hassanein on 2nd DL for a sack of Altmyer Amaris Brown - No mention today Melvin Priestly - Mentioned getting beat badly for a coule sacks on teh final drive of the scrimmage Detroit Lions TeSlaa, St brown & Gibbs, O'Neil, Goff and Gill-Howard Photos - Jeff Nguyen Detroit Lions Dan Campbell Day 14 Press Conference Dan Campbell opened Day 14 of camp from the podium, and he covered injuries, players and competition at various positions and how much he likes having the fans at camp. The link is the transcript of the items he was asked and answered: Dan Campbell Day 14 Press Event Media Scrums with Players The Lions had media availability with EDGE Eric O'Neil Detroit Lions EDGE Eric O'Neil EDGE Eric O'Neil This is obviously big plays that are a part of it and returning coaches and but also just the stacking days. Tell me about your mentality in doing that and what you've learned the most about putting these practices together. Yeah, you know, obviously I'm being coached by great guys around such great talent and guys who have proven themselves in the league making me a better player every day. So, you know, it's not hard to love it and have fun and be able to socialize yourself and enjoy doing it. You know, it's harder for guys that feel worried and they're a little nervous and worried but it's not like that here, you know, I got guys like Aidan Hutchinson and DJ Anzalone guys like that that help me every day and support me. So, just for me to go out there and play is the most important and just get a little bit better every day. Don't have to be perfect It was mentioned the stacking days. You had a pretty good preseason debut for you as well particularly the one rush where you kind of cooked the tackle on the outside and got a hit on the QB. Just, you know, what what's the confidence level for you right now just given the ability to kind of stack some nice days where this camp is progressing? Yeah, you know, obviously I think any rookie especially undrafted is going to be real nervous going to their first game. Not worried but you know, almost anxious to play. Um, so after the first play that was really it for me and you know, now it's just being able to stack that confidence like you said from that, you know, first rush and first game every day and eventually, you know, just solidify myself as a regular everyday NFL player where it's, you know, everyday is regular to me. It's not like wow, I'm in the NFL right now. Did your phone blow up after that? Tell me the messages after that game for the hit on Bro. Yeah, yeah. Um, so I was just home for a while because, you know, obviously I turned pro for the combine and I was hanging out so I was hanging out with all my guys and they were like, wow, you know, I just hooked you up a couple weeks ago and then I see you just hit Joe Burrow. Pretty interesting. I was like, yeah, I didn't even know what to say. And I was like, yeah, it was pretty cool to meet you. So, I can't complain about that. The Lions second preseason game is home at Ford Field against the Washington Commanders on Thursday Aug 22nd at 12pm. Transcripts are created with an assist from AI

  • Dan Campbell Camp Day 14 Press Event

Dan Campbell Camp Day 6 Press Event 08/17/26 Dan Campbell kicked off his Day 14 press event with feedback on seveal players, some upocoming preseason strategy, injury updates and more. Injury Summary New/Updates: Onwuzurike expected at practice Scruggs to be on capped amount of reps Jameson Williams minor shoulder injury, wont practice Monday night and no timeline Nick Whiteside minor hamstring issue also will miss Monday practice No Changes: Branch - Potentially Early September Kerby - Likely will linger into the season on same timeline as Branch Peyton Turner - Has not practiced all camp despite a "minor" stiff back Giovani Manu - Added to NFI/Injury List due to previously undisclosed injury form offseason Jimmy Rolder injury is a Hamstring, has been working and running off to the side Jacob Saylors - Ankle Quick Hitters Switching it up to an evening practice gives them a bit of rest time like a real week and a break from normal routine Tate Ratledge at Center on Sunday was more about "just in case" than a full time move with Mays being injured Scruggs will be at practice, but on capped reps. McLaughlin will get mixed back in at Center again Talked about flexibility on OL and DBs, but said DBs have more currently than OL Rotating guys through the nickel is about determine who has what traits as the nickel does a bunch of different jobs depending on the defense. Asked about Tate in particular how much a players preference goes int position, Campbell basically said the best player at a position will play Touched on Onwuzurike ramping up back to his 2024 self and that he is starting to hit the numbers they want to see. Will be at practice today Talked about McNeil being disruptive and that they sometimes have to let a play keep going even if he gets a "sack' just to get work in Loves the fans being at practice and the passion they bring Campbell mentioned that decision has been made that most (but not all) of the starters will go against Washington and they will get a significant amount of time. Dan Campbell Press Event Transcript Opening Statement: I just think it's a good change up for the guys. Uh little extra recovery coming out of yesterday for this one and we'll have a recovery tomorrow. Kind of come in, walk through, get their legs back before the practice, uh the following day. But, you know, it's like our schedule. I mean, we play Sunday night, Monday night, 1:00, 4:00, you know, and you're on a short week, long week. I just think it's good to break them, you know, just kind of break your uh the normal routine of uh you know, you get in the flow and then I think it's time to break it and get into the next thing cuz that's what the season's like. You got to be ready to adjust. We saw a heavy dose of Tate at center yesterday in team drills. Just was that kicking the tires while Juice gets back or is that something we might continue to see? Uh yeah, I think that was just, you know, getting him getting him some reps. I mean, you know, one way or another, he he's going to have to um be able to help us there. Um if it comes down to that where he's the guy or he's our next available center at the game if something happens, knock on wood. So, I think it was just, you know, that that's what some of that was. And um you know, so you know, I don't know if we'll do that tonight. Um probably get Juice. We got juice capped on reps today, so he won't get all of them. Uh, and then we'll probably put Seth back in there. Let him go a little bit. We'll keep Tate over there at right guard. Uh, how much fluidity is there in kind of the setup of both your offensive line and starting secondary right now, but it still seems like you're doing a lot of mixing and matching while you're missing some of those key pieces in Cade, Kirby, and Brian. Yeah. Well, there is flexibility. I feel like there's more flexibility in the secondary than the O line right now. you know, not that um I just there it may take a little less um time and work. Now, that being said, we still got a ways to go, but uh we're probably a little better equipped um over there. Um old line, you know, just kind of mentioned this, it just it would take time, you know, it would take reps, it would take time, you know, you know, you'd be pushing Tate in. Then you got to find your guards. um you know and then they got to work together. So it's a little bit of that you know um but it doesn't mean it that it's we don't have flexibility in the room. It just it it's going to take a little more time that's all. In particular with the nickel situation. Dan, you've been rotating a ton of guys at that top spot. Is it just because you don't feel good with one or you feel good with like three or four of them and you're just trying to decide which one is the right one for you guys? Yeah, I mean I think we're giving them all an opportunity and uh you know we use nickels for different jobs here depending on what the situation is and so that's some of it. It's also man who's your best cover guy, who's your best in the box player, who's your best blitzer and uh who's your best processor, the guy who's going to put out fires for you uh is just headsy gets it. So I think you know that's why we're rotating a lot of guy. are trying to figure out, you know, um really, you know, who can do what. Um and it's kind of the same thing once you figure that out, then then you need those guys to play together. You know, get these safeties together, get the corners together. We got Reed back. Rock's doing a good job uh and those other guys and uh kind of piece together and let him play with Tate, but also sort of in general, you know, like if a player has a preference to stay at one spot, I'm sorry, say it again. With Tate, but I'm also curious in general if a player has a preference to stay at one spot like he prefers right guard. How much do you take that into account versus maybe what the team needs and what's the balance you try to, you know, find there? Yeah. Well, look, you as much as you can, you want a player to be comfortable. I mean that that's you really do. But at some point if we have no choice, you know, um then then you got to do what you got to do and the players know that. I mean Tate knows that, you know, he'll do whatever for the team. Um but yeah, we certainly take that into account, too, man. We want somebody that, you know, is you got to be willing to take that leap a little bit. And um so, you know, if it came to that, a guy like Tate, he he's prepared to do that. He's a team guy. With Levi Onwuzurike, has he been on a ramp up plan at all still? Is how would you assess his performance in training camp and where is he at right now? Was kind of at the end of 2024 when he was kicking butt. Uh we have ramped him up. He's been on a ramp up plan. We felt like we started to hit some pretty good numbers. Um, and then he had a little set back. Uh, but I anticipate him being out there today. Um, and um, you know, you start talking about um, really I guess two years ago, he's a strong physical man. I mean, he's when he does it right and he plays low and he feels good, he can I mean, he can uh, wreak havoc in there. So, um, you know, he's doing a good job in there. He's mixing it up and it's just about, you know, trying to keep his body on the up and up right now. Hutch was somebody we were all watching very closely last season. Um, you know, for obvious reasons coming off the injury, but now, uh, this year seems like day in day out, he's just kind of wrecking things a little bit for the offense there. Just how's he come back, uh, to camp now a full year removed from the injury? Yeah, he looks he looks great. you know, he's like look, I would say he's it when you're when you are coming off that injury, your ability to train now being healthy basically, right? You're So, now you're kind of out of that rehab mode and now you're in a truly strength, conditioning, training, power, explosion, all of it. So, he's just continued that route and every year he becomes smarter, more crafty. He learns the game. He so he's elevating his FBI and just his skill set. I mean he he's um the guy works his skill set every day, man. And every year he comes up with a little something new. He knows how to play the chess game. Really in the run game, but the pass game you see it like he he'll set something up for a while and then he's going to he he'll counter you at some point. You know, he just he's the headsy player, man. He knows what he's doing. So, and then he's got a motor. I mean, my gosh, when you have all those and then you got the motor he does, you know, he he's a he's a massive problem uh for an offense. Just to stay with him for a sec, the uh I asked this, you know, say this half jokingly, but like how do you decide cuz he's so disruptive, how do you decide when to blow the whistle when he's in the back field in play some of these times, you know what I mean? Like he can Yeah. I mean [clears throat] I mean sometimes it's most of them what I do is if I don't blow them it's obvious and I'll just tell them hey that you know that's good job or that's a sack or um but sometimes I don't just for the sake of the drill you know you kind of have to do that a little bit otherwise you know you won't get a lot done so um but yeah he he's a pain man he he's definitely a pain but that's I'm glad he's our pain. Yeah, I know you guys get here so early in the morning. Um, we deal with a little bit of the traffic in a good way with so many of the fans, whether it's early in the morning, it's raining like it was what, two days yesterday, super hot like it has been. Just can you speak to the passion of the fans if it's in the morning, evening, night through the weather and maybe what you've noticed, especially this this summer? Yeah, I mean, it's pretty cool. I mean, we do we've got we do have passionate fans. They um you know, this I've said it all along, it's a unique place. It is. It's not like this everywhere. And uh they live it, they breathe it, and uh they're here for us and our players and they believe. And um man, our guys love to play, you know, they love to show up for them. I mean, you know, they love it when they come out here. It brings up the energy and uh and then certainly on Sundays we start playing. It's big. Dan, last season and the season before, I think even three straight seasons, you've always had the joint practices and whatnot. How do you gauge and know if your team is getting exactly what they were getting with that type of heightened practice routine? Yeah. Well, I think when you um I feel really good about that with where we're at right now. I think what you get is, you know, you do get different types of players, different skill sets, very good players. Like Houston, for example, man, you got Will Anderson coming in here. That's awesome. Like that's a that's a different guy who's an elite player. Um, but I'm also like Sewell and Hutch go against each other every day. I mean, tell me what's going to be better, you know? I mean, you're just talking about the competition of it and those guys working their craft against each other. Uh, Alim McNeil over there, you know, Ratl is an up-and-coming player. Um, you got Jah out of the backfield, you got to cover Jack Campbell, Mike, you know, pressure, coverage, all these things, man. Um, St. Brown, J amo. I just I think we've got pretty good competition here and um you know for this year I like I like what we're doing. I do. You know what at what point maybe this week you'll make a decision on starters getting time Saturday. Uh I've kind of already done that a little bit. Um you know I'm not going to tell you guys but um but not everybody will play. I would tell you that. We are going to play a significant amount of the starters. That's my plan right now. You want to tell the fans? No, not yet. Transcripts are created with the assist of AI

  • Lions vs Bengals: Preseason Opener Game Round Up

The Lions and Bengals battled in a meaningless pre-season game with the Bengals winning by the score of 16 – 14. The Lions played a handful of starters while the Bengals had theirs in for two series on both offense and defense. The game was pretty evenly played from a stats perspective, with the fumble that Bengals punched in for a TD in Lions end of the field being the main difference. Overall, it was just a sloppy game for both teams as expected, but entertaining, nonetheless. Here are some observations we had form the game Surprise Stat of the Games It felt like the backup QBs played decently tonight, but they ended up with a combined QB rating of 55.1, largely on the backs of two INTs and a 57% completion percentage caused by numerous WR drops. Player of the Game Ahmed Hassanein - Continues to make his presence known on the field. Had two sacks including a strip sack that ended a TD threat, 4 total (3 solo) tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 2 QB hits. Lions Ahmed Hassanein sacks Bengals QB Joe Burrow - Jeff Nguyen/Detroit Lions Who Caught our Eye Rookie defensive lineman - Skyler Gill-Howard, Eric O’Neil and Anthony Lucas combined for 5 tackles, 1 TFL and 3 QB hits. They always seemed to be around the ball on plays that ended near the line of scrimmage. Lions Eric O'Neil - Jeff Nguyen/Detroit Lions Winners Backup QB – Despite their Rating, both Luke Altmyer and Josh Dobbs looked better in one half tonight (against Bengals 1s and 2s) than any Lions backup QB has looked the last few years. Altmyer was making good reads, cool under pressure and tight spirals passes that were very catchable. Dobbs showed veteran presence, a nice ability to scramble and escape pressure and keep plays alive, Altmyer showed similar traits late in the game and had both a sneak for a 1st down and a bootleg for a 2-pt conversion. Nick Whiteside – Continues to impress on the field, including a standout PBU on a play he was beat deep after losing his balance and recovered to just knock the ball away. Jacob Saylors - Saylors was running hard, making decisive cuts and finding holes all over the place. Ended the first half with 6.9 YPC and 55 yards while also losing at least another 20 yards on penalties from his OL. Erick Hunter – This rookie UDFA LB is raw talent with lots of athleticism, but he was also around the ball a lot including making four solo tackles. Lions backup QB Luke Altmyer - Jeff Nguyen/Detroit Lions Losers Isaac Teslaa – TeSlaa had several drops including a key 4th down play and one that went through his hands and resulted in an INT. Ennis Rakestraw - Was getting picked on by Joe Flacco giving up completions and chunks of yardage on multiple plays in a row at one point before injuring himself on an open field tackle Miles Frazier – Disaster of a first half with three holding calls and got beat on a play that resulted in RB getting stuffed for no gain after hit in the backfield by Frazier’s man. Also gave up a sack while playing LT in the second half. In defense to Frazier, he played all 66 offensive snaps across multiple positions on the OL, which was 20 more than he accounted for on offense in all of 2025. Game Observations Offense Lions starting OL Borom – Mahogany – McLaughlin – Frazier – Miller Saylors ran extremely hard with good cuts and was picking up chunk yardage in the run and passing game, he also was also leading receiver with 28 yards on 3 catches and 5 targets WRs dropped a ton of passes, with Dominic Lovett and Isaac TeSlaa the main culprits OL continues to have communication issues on Blitz Pickups Defense Whiteside made a handful of great plays in coverage, including a recovery from a slip for a PBU Defense struggled with misdirection and staying home for their assignment on backside passes, losing TEs and RBs on those plays quite a bit Lions gave up chunk plays on Slants all night Special teams Punt returns were all North and South, no sideways nonsense like last few years from Khalif Raymond Kick return coverage has to be better; Bates was forced to save a TD, and the Lions gave up 36.5 avg on the two returns Bates was a perfect 2 of 2 (technically 3) on FGs with a long of 52 General Observations Lions played a sloppy game, with three turnovers (2 INts, 1 Fumble), four total fumbles, nine penalties for 84 yards) Passing game was more dump off than down the field, but there were several opportunities that were either dropped or just missed Feels like the Running game was featured tonight despite having less runs that passes, and the team responded with a 5.0 yards per carry and 129 yards rushing. There was a solid 20 additional yards lost due to penalties as well. The passing attack used appeared to be more vanilla than normal, with lots of shot passes and a measly 4.5 yards per pass. Likely die to a rookie and a guy in the system for two days taking the bulk of the snaps. The game provided the Lions with a LOT of situational work. They were able to run a 2-pt play, onside kick and a two-minute drill. Injuries were a problem again, with multiple players getting nicked up or having to leave the game. Ennis Rakestraw – Left with an apparent shoulder injury and went to locker room and did not return Loren Strickland – Pulled up with a left leg injury, could be hamstring or Achilles strain Amaris Brown – Upper Right Body injury on a tackle, was playing well prior to that Jacob Saylors – Left briefly after tackled form behind, could be mild ankle or turf toe Mekhi Wingo – Left with an apparent neck injury Chuck Clark – Possible concussion symptoms after a tackle

  • Sottie Montgomery Camp Day 8 Presser

WR coach Scottie Montgomery took his turn at the podium this morning Scotty Montgomery Press Event Transcript Opening Statement Good morning, guys. Feels like we're right back in the saddle for the regular season, but not quite yet. We got a lot of work to do until then. Um, you know, just this has been uh for us coming off of what we came off of last year. Um, accepting it, acknowledging it. Uh, it feels it feels really gritty out there right now. There's a lot of competition uh between groups, inside of the groups, offensive side of the ball, defensive side of the ball. Um, from a personnel standpoint, I think we've taken some huge steps and getting us to where we need to be. But all in all, man, it's been a good start to camp. We've had a lot of reps. It's been physical. Um, you know, the pads came on, so we're really excited to see that. And this week in general, the second week of camp is when we start to see the separation. Um, not just between, you know, skill, but it's also the mental separation that starts to happen. you some guys start not feeling quite as well as others and then now we can really see when the physicality comes into it who you know who are the guys that are going to separate themselves from schematical standpoint, physical standpoint, mental standpoint, and we're starting to see that unfold. So, it's been a great start to camp. We're really, really excited about where we are, but we know we have a long way to go to get to where we need to be. Can we uh can we start with Jah? Obviously, he got his extension. I don't know if it's officially signed yet, but he's back. who's back on the field yesterday. You were in the room with him, you know, for a couple years. Maybe you can speak to the progress he's made as a player, what this means, you know, to get him under contract just, you know, on a personal level to see him, you know, reap some rewards. Yeah. Not it's a really big deal. There is a movie and some of you guys are not going to get this. Um and some people will get this. Uh there's a movie and the movie original movie was Friday, but there was an uncle and his name was Elroy and he won the lottery, right? And his other bro brother Willie probably worked harder, did everything right, and was really upset with Elroy because he didn't get the lottery. You know, he didn't he didn't we didn't win it and Elroy won it and he moved to the suburbs and it was all great. So there's always this like if you don't earn something between brothers or family members, it's always like he's lucky he didn't this is one of those situations that since he you know he got here uh he earned it. So the feeling that we have you know for him uh is one of those feelings where we're happy for you know of course our organization, we're happy for the city, we're also happy for him. uh he has came in from day one and did everything we asked him to do. Uh he is what a pro should be having to be put in that position in the spotlight from day one. The expectations, you know, some people might have thought that uh he was drafted uh in haste uh and now uh him having to deal with that and listen to that. Sometimes they can have a real effect on the mental for those some of those guys. But with him, man, he is the exact opposite of Uncle Elroy. if I did have a little brother, I would be really happy to be a part of his family and I am now and to see where he's, you know, when he's been able to come from and just the protection, um, the route running. Uh, everybody know he's an unbelievable ball carrier. Um, but the mental part that goes in with all of it and handling his business as a professional. Uh, I hope a lot of kids, a lot of people are watching uh the way that he went about the process and going from year one to year two to year three and continually to getting better, but still having that same chip on his shoulder. Uh, coming from Georgia Tech to Alabama and to where we are now of not being quite good enough. And then now he has to, you know, remind himself and we have to do a good job as coaches to make sure that he understands that, you know, nothing's changed. you know, just, you know, his financial situation has changed, but the person what it's going to take uh for us to get to where we need to get to. None of that has changed. So, we got to make sure that, you know, he's aware of that. And we we're all aware of that. And it just feels really good that the right brother uh won and did things the right way and is getting rewarded for what he's been able to put together. He's going to be a bell cow for you this year. I mean, I think we all saw the workload. Do you have any concerns about, you know, the uptick in workload if there is one for him and what that means for his body and his ability to handle that? Yeah, we're always concerned, you know, physically for all of our players. You know, I got a concern about Saint going to hit safeties and so all of us have, you know, a lot on our plate, but that's up to us to manage it. You know, we'll do a good job of managing the way, you know, he touches it and a bail cow in some situations. You know, you hear bail cow in 2001, 2002, 2003, that means 40 carries. But when you got a guy like J, you can be a bail cow and touch it 10 times and have 200 total yards, and that's still a bell cow. Uh so there's different ways to look at that. We just need him to be impactful with and without the football. Uh we'll maintain everything else. Coach has a good plan uh for that. But, you know, he's earned it. He's earned the right to run out first. he's earned the right to um carry the ball in in in certain situations and then to be able to make plays in third down situations. So, uh if you do have a bell cow, a lot of people think about that just turn around and handing the ball to that player, but this is a player that can be a bail cow on third down without turning around and handing it to him. He can go play at the receiver position. He can play at the wing position. He can play at the back. So, there's a lot that he can do. several months into this and now kind of into the heart of fitting scheme to personnel. What have you enjoyed about working with with Drew? Wow. Just u the overall collective that you know none of us are as smart as all of us. Uh really he has done a really good job of coming in um and understanding that we are uh extremely talented. Uh we have uh whether that be on the player side or the coaching side. and he also understands his talents coming in. So, uh his ability to spread the ball out evenly to start this camp. Uh we've seen growth in certain players uh that we really we needed to see. And then we've seen guys that we really didn't know much about uh be able to flourish a little bit in this not only in the environment but also in this offense. And it has a lot to do with a lot of the rooms that we have and the way we put it together. But man, he does a fantastic job in the installation schedule when we're installing with our guys, making sure that everybody feels that they're a part of this install. Uh he is u a great communicator. Uh he can articulate an idea and make it, you know, to a point of where it may be 10 15 people in the room, but you got to reach all 15. You can't just reach one or two or three or four. uh and he's doing a really good job of reaching not only the players but the coaches and using the expertise of different coaches and just shining it up and he's doing a really good job. Any observations of Jared and Alman Ra um given the consistency given the relationship um about how they are basically the most consistent tandem you know five years running anything you know that stands out to you about how they keep doing it? Yeah, routine. Their routine. If you watch, you know, Omar at the uh if you're watching Saint in the beginning of practice, there's a routine that goes through it. Like his catching routine. If you watch JG, there's a throwing routine. If you watch us in RVAs, there is a throwing routine. These guys, their timing is correct, but they're also their off the- field relationship also gives us an opportunity uh that a lot of people don't have. uh the communication between the two of them is probably what makes them as consistent as they are. There's certain things and there's nonverbal communication that happen between them now because of where we are in the offense where they are in their relationship away from the building. There's things that I'm like who's who said that? Who who's doing that? And it's in the middle of the play and they're both on the same page. The ball's on the outside shoulder or slowing outside protecting from an interior player when we hadn't even talked about that. But they both know through experience and routine uh and making sure that they're doing everything exactly the same way. We're trying to make everything we do look exactly the same until it's not. And they do a good job of that. How remarkable is that to have the unspoken uh communication click so often? And I think it's very important and mostly, you know, when you come to slots, you know, when you get slot receivers and you get he can play inside and out. So, but when you're when he's in that slot role, the timing is so critical. Uh the detail is so critical. The spaces are so tight, you can't have a false step. You know, JG can't hit his back foot and hitch twice. If he needs to hitch once and get it out, that's what he has to do. And in that in that role, when we're in those situations, those criticals, they get it right. You know, outside receivers, there's a little bit of a release time. There's a little bit of things that can go on out there on the edge and he's reading, but when you're in a slot, man, the decisions have to be made so quick. There's so many options that go on with the route running that happens there. JG absolutely has to know everything that he's doing. And it is very remarkable for them to be able to complete like some of the passes that they're doing right now. Jameson is uh shown a big kind of leap in contestant catchability. Can you just give us your perspective on what kind of work went in behind the scenes to make that happen? Yeah, we left the season, man. We were um you know, our mind was made up. Uh we do have action plans that are given to each player. Uh he came to me, you know, and we talked about the different things. Uh you may hear me saying checkpoint uh on the field and checkpoint A, B, and C are just different checkpoints and where we're catching the football. We've really worked on the checkpoint that is A, which is way out in front. Uh once it gets to B, you know, that's when we start talking about the 50/50 and then once it gets all the way into the body, there is no extra chance to catch the ball. So, what we've tried to do is extend his checkpoint and you see him probably snatching a lot more balls right now out away from his body. But what it does is when you get to checkpoint A and you can see it, it makes some of those checkpoint C catches uh a little bit easier to make. Uh if you catch it late, now your eyes are working and your hands are working a little bit better. But we've really tried to work those checkpoints. Uh and then the other part that we've tried to make him understand is that listen, separation is one thing, but when we get in really tight areas, the separation is going to be reduced because we can't run away from everybody, right? We can't always be the quickest guy to get out of our breaks like some of the slots, but what we can do is get our checkpoints and our catches and our body positioning. He's really did a good job um not only since we started in the spring, but even before of changing some of his body positions and closing his back shoulder on some catches, maybe pushing back on receivers down the field throws in 23 and 24. One of the things I watched about him is that once his, you know, once his speed and, you know, momentum got moving, he was very, we didn't get enough PIs because we were running through the catch instead of jumping back into the catch. And now with his body being stronger and he's done a good job physically, he's able to create a little bit more contact and the catch or at least contact to where we will get hopefully a few more PIs than we've received in the last um couple years. And I'm going to let that go. Hey Scotty, Tesla's action plan and where do you see his growth? Yeah, so you know, we're really still working. Uh there's no doubt about that. Separation was one of the deals. But when some people hear separation, they think that it's all quickness and movement. Yes, that's a part of it. But when you're 6'3, 200, whatever pounds, the other part that you're able to separate on is the physicality and route running. So now we've tried to build both of those together so that his change up is one thing one day and then his fast ball is another day. So if we can continue to build that, uh his catch points are crazy though. He makes plays with the ball. Now, as the number three where he's working in this role to try to become this great player in that three role, one of the things he has to understand is we're going to see a lot of 77 double, excuse me. We're going to see a lot of double uh J Mo, double Saint or double LaPorta, double Gibby. And now you're going to be on a three-um corner uh third corner and you have to create separation whether that be with size or whether that be with quickness. So, a lot of those situations are going to happen for him. We're looking forward to see where he's going to go. Scott, you've been on the staff for a few years now, but last year it was your first one taking over the wide receivers. Have familiarity with those guys, but how much stronger would you say the bond is between you and the guys in that room now heading into this season? Oh, man. You know, I I think that, you know, when I first came into the room, I had a great relationship with him, uh, from a football standpoint. Now, it's personal, right? Now, it's, you know, I know the children. I know the mothers, I know uh the fiances, I know a lot of the other people that are connected to it. So, it makes a big deal. Uh we also, you know, had a chance to go play golf. So, there's things in there that, you know, when you're building those relationships and those just the competitive nature that you get to see from different guys. Saint hates to lose, okay? He absolutely hates to lose. So, all these things that you get to see when we go into the meeting room, we're looking at each other eye to eye a little bit different. They know that I have absolutely their best uh professional interest, which they knew that last year. Now they know that I also have their best personal interest. So, it is it has been it's been a great deal. I'm glad that I'm in a room. I I do miss our backs. Um you know, the ones that are still, you know, here that I had the ability to coach. So, you know, that's always tough, but the personal part of it has been became really special this off season for me with the W outs. Jahmyr, back to Jahmyr real fast. you've had a front row seat to his development here and you've played a big part in it yourself on the field. Where have you seen his game grow the most since he entered the NFL in 2023? Okay, so let me let me back up. Let me attack something that you said. I have seen his development, and I've been a major part of it. I don't know that part to be true. I will say his genetics um his family um if you give me a player like that, I can get that player better, right? So that's what happened with that. But what I've really seen in him, his first year coming in, you have to realize when you're in college football, um, protections are probably the least of worries in college football. You got spacing, right? You if you pressure guys in college with the hashes and different things, you can get balls out hot. You don't want to let him get in space. Well, in this league, you got backers that can actually cover. You got safeties that can actually cover the speed type. So, when you add the protection piece into it, um it's critical. Like we came into I believe the first um uh training camp practice, I think we were between 12 and 14 protections. Um for a back 12 to 14 protections and understanding all the rules, whether it's plus one, minus one, plus two on the front side. I'm on the back side. I got four and five. Uh with this the front side safety, backside safety. Usually for backs that comes in year two, three when they get it all. He was pretty good at that in year one. Now we're in year three, year four. The installation for him. He's just looking at it like, "Oh, okay. I got it." No, no, no. I'm front side of this. Oh, no. I'm back coach. And he's coaching the other players finally, right? He We all looked at him like he's still I don't even know. He's Wait, he's 23 years old. What is he right now? 22 23 somewhere in there. He's young. 24. Um that's crazy. He just I'm just thinking about that now. He's coaching our guys that a lot of them are older than him. I mean, he's in the room with some guys that are older than him that haven't played quite as much. So, I think that's the part that we're really, really excited about his growth as a leader. So, now it's time for him to take that step that we saw Saint take a few years back. Um, you know, you know, we've seen Jack Campbell take that step defensively. Now it's time for us to see that next step of leadership which we believe that he can Transcripts are created with the assist of AI

Officials were on the field for the first time in camp, and lots of flags, mostly for DBs being handsy past five yards were thrown. Jahmyr Gibbs caused a bit of a stir by trotting out in full pads and taking warmups and a few walkthroughs, but then retreated to the sideline to working off to the side He did not take questions at the end of practice form the media, but did give a thumbs up to someone that shouted if a deal was close? Apparently close meant this evening. In the OL/DL 1-on-1s, Ahmed Hassanein and Christian Mahogany were top performers today In WR/DBs, Khalil Dorsey had the only TD and TeSlaa high-pointed a pass over Whiteside for the catch of the day Jake Bates was 6 of 8 today, hooking a 48-yarder to the left and pushing a 39-yarder wide right. Situation drill to end practice for both second team Offense and Defense Offense was down 1 with 3:30 left, the task was to score and deplete as much clock as possible Punt was downed at the six-yard line Offense got a quick first down, but then Frazier jumped on 1st & 10 Next play Hassanein executed a stunt for a sack on 2n and 15 Once reset, Altmyer had six straight completions, two runs by Robicheaux and then Bates nailed a 41-yarder to "win" as the time expired. Depth Chart Observations by Position Group OL Not much mention of OL today, but no Scruggs meant Mahogany received most of the 1st team LG resp once again. RBs Saylors, Small and Robichaux split 1st and 2nd team reps with Vaki, Gibbs and Pacheco all out WRs TeSlaa has a nice bounce back day, and Kennedy also picked up the pace form reports Williams and TeSlaa had great high point catches that were worthy of catch-of-the-day TE Ty Conklin was back and getting 2nd and 3rd team reps Meeks reportedly had a really good day in blocking and stiff-armed Dorsey turning a 5-yard reception into 15 DL Breakout days for Hassanein and Gill-Howard LBs Devin White received quite a bit of 1st team WILL LB reps next to Campbell today. Nowaske was also on 1st team per reports. Safety Same players in same roles Nickel It was noted that McCreary has been just ok so far in camp, with Izien and Rakestraw potentially moving past him on the depth chart at nickel Outside CBs Dorsey was working with the twos and had a good day overall Returners No Updates: Greg Dortch, Toim Kennedy, Lawrence Keys, Isiah Pacheco, Dominic Lovett Gunners No Updates: Dorsey, Izien, Rakestraw, Abney and Ya-Sin were mentioned as having strong days Rookies Blake Miller - Was in Camp photos today. Derrick Moore - Expected to miss 7-10 days with a groin strain Jimmy Rolder - Campbell identified his injury as a Hamstring and re-stated he will be out for a while. Keith Abney II - Identified as the victim of Kennedy on a post pattern from the slot, but got his revenge against Tom K on a corner route later. Kendric Law - Done for season with a torn ACL suffered win OTA Week 2 practices Skyler Gill-Howard - Campbell mentioned Gill-Howard as being able to do things form the three-tech that others can't and just needs to keep doing things. He also received some 1st team work in full team drills including what was reported as a nice run stop at the line with Barnes and a sack on Altmyer. It was a mixed bag in 1-on-1s, as he was pancaked by fellow rookie Priestly, bested Miles Frazier but also lost to Tate Ratledge. Tyre West - Bested Mason Miller twice in 1-on-1s but lost to McLaughlin and then twice to Priestly. The link is the transcript of the items he was asked and answered: Lions OC Drew Petzing Day 7 Press Event Media Scrums with Players The Lions had media availability with LB Jack Campbell. Lions Jack Campbell LB Jack Campbell I know it's the other side of the ball, but it's nice to get Jah out here even a couple, you know Is it nice? I don't know. For me, I was like, I saw him back out there. I was like, gosh, now I got to go one-on- ones against him >> in routes. But yeah, it's No, it's good to have Jah back. Uh, he's, you know what he is. You know what he does for the team. He's electric. Um, I came in with him. He's been nothing but good to me and my family the whole time I've been here. And he's just a fantastic human being. Um, so I mean, yeah, it's awesome to have him back out here, but it'll make my job a little bit tougher. I think you played all of eight snaps last year. I mean, what does it take to do that? And do you expect to play as much I guess this year? I mean All of eight snaps. Yeah. No, I mean I for me I mean that's the mentality that I come in with like I want to give me I give me it all. I don't care. I mean that's what I'm here for. I feel like uh I just right and that's what this is for. I'm trying to load up myself. Um and especially like playing special teams like I mean I want to um we'll see what happens. But I mean I would I mean I did it last year. I'll do it again. But just like you got to call your body to be run down on kickoff and get into a series. There's no excuses. Doesn't matter that you just ran down, made a tackle or didn't make a tackle and you're tired. Like it doesn't matter. So right now that's my thought process. like as many reps I can get, ones, twos, threes, fours, fives, I don't care who's it against, just let me get my body going. So Skyler Gilh Howard's a guy who's got a couple, you know, first team reps today, rookie defensive tackle. What's you what's your first impression? I feel like he just he's he can do a lot of things at the three technique position a lot of guys can't do. Um, and I kind of see him fitting. I mean, every player's a little bit different, but I kind of like wingo-ish feel. So, we'll see where it goes. But, I mean, he's done a good job. You just need to keep going. You guys ran the most uh I think the highest number three linebacker, you know, uh last year. How does the dynamic change if you go play a lot more nickel this year? Um yeah, I mean it's just it's a competition. We'll see what's going to happen. Um I know this year though a lot of teams are going to get into 22 personnel and 13 personnel. So um we'll see what happens. I don't I don't you can't play nickels to that. So we'll see what happens. And you've seen it around the league. I know it's coming. A lot of teams are going to get back into two back because nowadays people come I'm not going to say conferences or anything but they don't see two back no more and that's just what it is. So and you got a lot of kids you can you can manipulate runs fits get angles on guys really easy with the two back fit. So yeah. How much is your responsibility if you if you do play the nickel? I mean how much does your responsibility change? Oh it doesn't really change at all. It just for me it's just that guy stepping in just doing his job. Sure. Um cuz a lot of our stuff, the nickel and the third linebacker are just literally the same people. They just interchanged. Now we just put in a lighter body and instead of a bigger body and now I mean what do you expect? We get a nickel, they're going to run the ball. So And your impressions of Devon, I guess. Yeah, he's been great. Uh he's I mean he's a true vet. He's been in the league twice as long as me. So it's been good to talk to him. His thing like how he sees things. He I mean he played at a super high he's been playing at a super high level. So just like seeing how he sees it, just getting on the same page with him. I mean, he's been fantastic for the room. Uh it's he's learned the system so fast. He's done a fantastic job. You've talked about taking ownership of the defense. Have you seen other guys maybe fall in that fall in that line with you, taking ownership of it all? I feel like right now, I mean, it's just the main staple. Like Hutch, he's you know what he's got to be. Mac, you know what he's got to be. Um and I feel like secondary wise, DJ Reed, you know what he's got to be. Rock, True Vet, Vonte, Chuck, all those guys have just done a fantastic job. LB room, I mean, D Barnes has done a great job. So, um, and a bunch of other guys. So, I mean, I'm missing guys and I always hate when I name people because then I always remember that I miss one. So, but, uh, we we've done a good job on that front, but there's more to be had. The Lions first preseason game is at Cincinnati on Thursday Aug 13th at 7pm. Transcripts are created with an assist from AI

  • Detroit Lions sign RB Jahmyr Gibbs to Record Breaking Contract

Lions Gibbs re-sets RB contract market two-days after Robinson RB Jahmyr Gibbs of the Detroit Lions has been holding a "sit in" while trying to get a new contract form the Detroit Lions. He was joining fellow 2023 draftee RB Bijan Robinson of Atlanta with this tactic, and they both got what they wanted in the end. Robinson signed a record deal on Tuesday morning making him the highest paid RB in the NFL, and Gibbs followed it up by re-setting the RB market on Thursday with a slightly higher APY and guarantee. Robinsons was drafted 8th overall and Gibbs 12th, and both have outperformed their lofty draft position and become the two best RBs in the NFL. The Robinson Deal was a three-year extension with a record $51M guaranteed that set the new RB APY at $22.5M, besting Saquon Barkley's $20.6M. The Gibbs deal is also a three-year extension and is reportedly for $75.75M in new money with $51.5M guaranteed and an APY of $22.525M, slightly besting Robinson's deal. In 2025, Gibbs was 7th in rushing Yards (1223), t4th in Rushing TDs (13), had the 3rd longest Rush (78 yards), averaged 5.0 yards per carry and was 3rd among RBs in Receptions (77), Receiving Yards (616) and receiving TDs (5) in all three categories.
